With autograph envelope postmarked "Paris 5 XII 1933" addressed to Elinor Ann Schloss on West 72nd Street in New York City. Signed and inscribed by the composer: "à Miss Elinor Ann Schloss" and "Xbr October 1933" at head and with "Avec les hommages de l'Apprenti Sorcier et de Paul Dukas" at lower outer margin. Slightly worn and browned; cut from a larger sheet with slightly irregular outer and lower margins; creased at central fold and very slightly overall; remnants of tape to verso; envelope worn and browned with upper margin ragged where opened and remnants of tape to both recto and verso. L'apprenti sorcier based on Goethe's 1797 poem Der Zauberlehring was first performed in Paris on 18 May 1897 by the Societe Nationale de Musique with the composer conducting. The work had four main themes: for water for the broom for the apprentice and for the sorcerer. It gained universal recognition with the incorporation of the music into the animated film "Fantasia" produced by the Disney Studios in 1940 featuring the cartoon character Mickey Mouse in the role of the apprentice. "The immediate success and world-wide renown of L'Apprenti sorcier which first brought the name of Dukas before the general public was well deserved; for this dazzling picture in sound of the tribulations that befell the disobedient sorcerer's apprentice in Goethe's ballad is a little masterpiece of 'representational' music most imaginatively conceived and brilliantly carried out. Le texte est annoté, et biffé à l'encre noire et violette (par un tiers ?). Rédigée sur 5 feuillets de papier très fin. Une note manuscrite à la fin du tapuscrit indique : "Chronique des Arts - 29 Déc. 1894 - 5 janvier 1895" Cet ensemble constitue la base de l'article paru dans la Chronique des Arts et de la Curiosité (supplément de la Gazette des Beaux-Arts) lors des livraisons du 29 décembre 1894 et du 5 janvier 1895. C'est une analyse approfondie des goûts musicaux d'Eugène Delacroix à travers son Journal. Sont notamment évoqués ses rapports avec Chopin, son admiration pour Mozart, ainsi que des critiques sur Beethoven, Berlioz, Wagner ou encore Meyerbeer. Avec une annotation manuscrite "Paul Dukas" apposée en fin de texte sur le cinquième feuillet. Dimensions : 21 x 26,5 cm État : Papier pelure très fin et fragile, avec de multiple déchirures et manques avec atteinte du texte. Nombre de pages : 5 pages Paul Dukas Paul Dukas, né le 1ᵉʳ octobre 1865 dans le 1ᵉʳ arrondissement de Paris et mort le 17 mai 1935 dans le 16ᵉ arrondissement de la même ville, est un compositeur français. Perfectionniste et exigeant, il abandonne nombre de ses projets musicaux et ne publie qu'une poignée de ses œuvres.

Mais avec le travail pour Rouch, que jaurais dj bien de la peine poursuivre dans les conditions matrielles o je me trouve (& ) je crois quil serait imprudent (& ) daccepter cette nouvelle entreprise. (...) Javoue dailleurs que je ne connais pas le Divertissement la Hongroise !! C'est honteux. Mais cest comme cela& Jacques Rouch (1862-1957) est un mcne devenu un acteur incontournable de la scne culturelle franaise. Il sera nomm en 1913 la tte de lOpra de Paris, poste quil occupera pendant 30 ans.
