1996réf. acs1429Wilmington Delaware: Scholarly Resources Inc. 1996. Quarto red cloth hardcover gilt lettering and decoration to upper cover xvii 519 pp. Near Fine. From Introduction: The military contributions of black soldiers in the war for the Union and subsequent conflicts are generally well covered in the literature that has emerged since the 1960s. The small regular Army that remained after the Civil War set important precedents for black soldiers. Most important the post-Civil War Army included six regiments set aside for black enlisted men. For the first time blacks had a permanent place in the peacetime military establishment of the United States. Their officers were all white and with only a handful of exceptions remained so for almost a century. Moreover the establishment of regiments exclusively for blacks introduced de jure segregation to the military service long before President Woodrow Wilson imposed it on the civilian branches of government. Nevertheless the creation of the 9th and 10th Cavalry regiments and the 38th 39th 40th and 41st Infantry units was generally considered a positive step taken in recognition of the major contributions that black soldiers had made to preserving the Union during the civil War. Congress created the six black regiments as part of the reorganization act of July 28 1866. In the spring of 1869 the six became four as the Army was reduced once more. The two cavalry units remained intact but the four infantry regiments were reduced to two. The 38th and 41st were combined to make up the 24th Infantry regiment; the 39th and 40th became the 25th. In the fifty-year period that is covered in this book until the American entry in the great European war the troops in these regiments served in all of the nation’s battles. They chased and fought plains and desert tribes during the decades immediately following the Civil War and stayed in the West to garrison scattered posts and provide assurance for nervous settlers. They also participated in the Cuban battles against Spain and in the ensuing guerrilla war in the Philippines and fought in skirmishes along the Mexican border.
