2015ill., br.

1967Best.-Nr. 2305248New York: G. Schirmer 1967. Soft Cover. Very Good. 0x0x0. Wrappers top edge and a few pages lightly foxed. 1967 Soft Cover. xlv 241 pp. Edited and with an introduction by Arthur Mendel. "The Passio secundum Joannem or St John Passion is a Passion or oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach the older of the surviving Passions by Bach. It was written during Bach's first year as director of church music in Leipzig and was first performed on April 7 1724 at Good Friday Vespers at the St. Nicholas Church. The structure of the work falls in two halves intended to flank a sermon. The anonymous libretto draws on existing works notably Brockes' and is compiled from recitatives and choruses narrating the Passion of Christ as told in the Gospel of John ariosos and arias reflecting on the action and chorales using hymn tunes and texts familiar to a congregation of Bach's contemporaries. Compared with the St Matthew Passion the St John Passion has been described as more extravagant with an expressive immediacy at times more unbridled and less "finished". The work is most often heard today in the 1739 - 1749 version never performed during Bach's lifetime. Bach first performed it in 1724 and revised it in 1725 1732 and 1749 adding several numbers. "O Mensch bewein dein Sunde groß" a 1725 replacement for the opening chorus found a new home in the 1736 St Matthew Passion but several arias from the revisions are found only in the appendices to modern editions. 1975Best.-Nr. ps09London: Heinemann 1975. First Edition. Octavo black boards hardcover gilt letters ix 337 pp. Very Good with light foxing age darkened spotting to page edges; in a Very Good dust jacket with light edgewear. From dust jacket: Richard Bach’s first book since Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a collection of forty-eight stories and articles which celebrate the highlights of fifteen years of flight and flying. He has a sparkling facility for communicating information about flying and aircraft together with an astonishing dreamlike imagination that is as boundless as the sky though it is no more a book for flying buffs alone than is Francis Chichester just for sailors. Whether he is writing about barnstorming in biplanes the hazards of being a fighter test-pilot coping with aircraft that many would consider museum pieces or the memorable day when he shot down the Red Baron -- for a film -- Richard Bach shares with everyone the meaning and joy of flight. Together with stirring illustrations by K O Eckland all the book’s thoughts and actions lead in an overall way to the themes of Jonathan Livingston Seagull and contribute to an understanding of that special ingredient of adventure freedom and discovery with which Richard Bach flavours his life.
