1916rif. 14018Paris: H. Floury 1916. Very good plus. First edition of this French large-format picture book history of the contested Alsace region then under German occupation - published at a time when even speaking French in the region was against the law. From the cover illustration of l'Oncle Hansi reading to children dressed in traditional Alsatian garb to the final passage detailing the Germans' violent oppression of French language and culture L'HISTOIRE D'ALSACE makes a powerful historical case for the French identity of the region. An especially nice copy of a book generally found in poor condition. 13.5'' x 10.75''. Original blue cloth pictorial boards expertly rebacked with original spine laid down. Edges stained red. Black-and-white pictorial endpapers with stork pattern. Illustrated in color. 104 pages. Binding with mild edgewear a hint of soil. Small bookseller's label to front pastedown removed label to verso of front flyleaf. Leaves evenly toned. Clean and bright. H. Floury unknown
1915rif. V75330Paris: H.Fleury 1915. Hardcover. Very Good. every opening with color illustrations including 16 large full page illustrations Hansi & Huen. Large Quarto 330-276mm Pictorial cover in colour on pale blue cloth minor edge tanning but illustration and gilt titles all bright and without scratches etc All edges red. Blank leaf half title titlepage Why he wrote this book 100pp. Very mild tanning to margins and two small indentations to haLf title else a lovely crisp copy with fine strong clean paper throughtout. With the original flying storks for which the Alsace is known on the endpapers. Written because the author remembers his student days at the German school at Colmar when the Professor was continually denegrating the Frence student and forced them to learn only about the great history of Prussia. Accordingly during the First World War Waltz has written this book to teach about the great history of the Alsace not through the eyes of the Germans who had controlled Alsace since 1871 - "L Annee Terrible" but through the eyes of the French. Begins in the Gallic period ending with the beginning of WW1 rallying against German imperialism "let us hope for better days my children; because the future does not belong to the good lord and not to the ugly man who is a pan-Germanist". Excellent copy. H.Fleury hardcover
