"The Second Symphony coheres by virtue of a web of recurrent thematic strands. The technique of motivic recall is enhanced by Schumann's employment of contrapuntal combinations. Specifically the chorale theme introduced midway through the finale is integrated with the opening theme of the first movement also a chorale in the symphony's concluding passages. The displacement of the finale's initial march-like theme by a pair of interwoven chorales in essence lifts the Second Symphony from a secular to a quasi-religious plane." John Daverio and Eric Sams in Grove Music Online. F. Whistling [PN 429-431] unknown
