"The deepest devotions in the hearts of the capital's inhabitants have their roots in the Colonial Era and in the ancestral beliefs of the ancient Mayans. From the 16th century the Mayan Spanish and African groups that inhabited the city of Santiago de Guatemala were united by the Catholic religion and as the interbreeding increased the practices of popular piety also became more complex. Our ancestors showed their devotion in different ways and their faith allowed them to overcome problems such as natural disasters epidemics and relocations of the city. Baroque art was oriented towards evangelization so we have a rich architectural pictorial and sculptural heritage. In this work we can also appreciate the evolution of goldsmithing jewelry and cabinetmaking. From the years after the transfer of the capital to the Ermita Valley we have very detailed descriptions of the religious celebrations both in New Guatemala and the Assumption and in Antigua Guatemala which allows us to understand the roots of our devotion.
