1749Best.-Nr. AQ19735London: Printed for Daniel Browne 1749. 2 207pp 1. With a final page of publisher's advertisements. Contemporary speckled calf contrasting red morocco lettering-piece gilt. Extremities rubbed slight splitting to joints. Later typed bookseller/auction descriptions pasted to FEP lightly spotted. The first edition of a selection of songs intended to serve as an 'Antidote against Melancholy'. A great many of the songs among them 'Thus we'll drown all melancholy' 'Banish sorrow let's drink' and 'The generous Wine now tempts my Lip' address the relationship between alcohol and feelings of depression or despondency whether as a cure or an incitement. The verses exalt the power to 'drown all our cares in full bumpers of sherry' often linking drunkenness with sins of lust and greed although largely celebratory in tone - the 'antidote' present in the title seems to be a bottle of wine and the pursuit of women! ESTC records copies at two locations in the British Isles BL and Cambridge and a further nine locations worldwide. ESTC T86027. First edition. 8vo. Printed for Daniel Browne unknown

1923Best.-Nr. 47695Paris. 1923 – 1924. Contemporary blue cloth-backed marbled boards original publisher's pictorial colour printed wrappers for each issue preserved bookplate of 'Librairie du Spectacle Garnier Arnoul' to front pastedown. Small folio. 274 x 194 mm. Printed text in double columns in French with songs articles letters quotations printed music caricatures vignettes and photographic portraits. A very scarce complete set of the revue devoted to the singers and songs of Montmartre.Founded by Roger Toziny 'poète-chansonnier' as a forum - an impartial one - for the discussion appreciation and criticism of those songs from the cabarets night-clubs and music halls of Montmartre. 'Les Chansons de la Butte' looks back to the heyday of Le Chat Noir and its aftermath but also to the contemporary song. The first issue features a photograph of Henri Fursy Président de l'Association Amicale des Chansonneurs to the front wrapper and begins with a laudatory letter from Jacques Ferny the author of a considerable number of fin-de-siècle songs and continues in similar fashion.Contributors include Xavier Privas Antoine-Paul Tavarel Marcel Say René-Paul Groffe Charles d'Avray Pierre Mérop Henri Guilac Eugène Lemercier Philéas Lebesgue Jacques Ferny Maurice Mauclay et al.For reasons unknown 'Les Chansons de la Butte' seems to have ceased publication at the end of 1924. The final number truncates those for October November and December into a single issue and it may be that Toziny was unable to assemble enough material to continue this despite having mentioned the conclusion of the yearly 'abonnement' subscription and the invitation to renew printed in this final number.Complete sets as per the present set are very scarce and we can locate only that example at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Europe together with two in the US Duke and Vanderbilt as well as the copy at Melbourne in Australia. hardcover

1931Best.-Nr. 10087Indianapolis 1931. Manuscript. Typescript 10.4x8" unpaginated typed rectos only. Red pebbled title page with inset photo of Raymer lettered in manuscript. Heavy duty metal post binding in black buckram boards. Covers rubbed and soiled pages somewhat toned and with smudging a few instances of edge chipping and wear. Title page with some moisture damage. Good sound condition. An exceptional collection of folk cowboy and mountain song lyrics compiled and typed by the little-known performer Morell Raymer. As the title page notes the material was "First broadcasted Feb. 3 1931 over the radio station WKBF in Indianapolis Ind." Raymer was known professionally as the "Yodeling Kid" and apparently performed on Midwestern radio as well as for local social gatherings. The entire collection appears to be original typed pages from at least two different typewriters with hundreds of songs included. 32 songs at the end of the book have chord notations in manuscript along with a guitar chord chart also in manuscript at the rear. While preserving many familiar folk standards the collection is particularly notable for the large number of songs of limited or apparently regional circulation. Works associated with performers such as Jimmie Rodgers Roy Acuff and the Carter Family are represented alongside numerous cowboy and western songs that appear to have enjoyed only local or regional popularity. Many of the songs also preserve verses omitted from commercial recordings; for example "Red River Valley" is present in a nine-verse version and "Old Joe Clark" contains ten verses. Although designated "Book No. 1" on the title page no evidence of subsequent volumes has been located. An extraordinary survival documenting the repertoire of early twentieth-century American folk and western music preserving numerous apparently undocumented songs and textual variants. An important resource for the study of American vernacular song traditions. unknown
