1931rif. 10087Indianapolis 1931. Manuscript. Typescript 10.4x8" unpaginated typed rectos only. Red pebbled title page with inset photo of Raymer lettered in manuscript. Heavy duty metal post binding in black buckram boards. Covers rubbed and soiled pages somewhat toned and with smudging a few instances of edge chipping and wear. Title page with some moisture damage. Good sound condition. An exceptional collection of folk cowboy and mountain song lyrics compiled and typed by the little-known performer Morell Raymer. As the title page notes the material was "First broadcasted Feb. 3 1931 over the radio station WKBF in Indianapolis Ind." Raymer was known professionally as the "Yodeling Kid" and apparently performed on Midwestern radio as well as for local social gatherings. The entire collection appears to be original typed pages from at least two different typewriters with hundreds of songs included. 32 songs at the end of the book have chord notations in manuscript along with a guitar chord chart also in manuscript at the rear. While preserving many familiar folk standards the collection is particularly notable for the large number of songs of limited or apparently regional circulation. Works associated with performers such as Jimmie Rodgers Roy Acuff and the Carter Family are represented alongside numerous cowboy and western songs that appear to have enjoyed only local or regional popularity. Many of the songs also preserve verses omitted from commercial recordings; for example "Red River Valley" is present in a nine-verse version and "Old Joe Clark" contains ten verses. Although designated "Book No. 1" on the title page no evidence of subsequent volumes has been located. An extraordinary survival documenting the repertoire of early twentieth-century American folk and western music preserving numerous apparently undocumented songs and textual variants. An important resource for the study of American vernacular song traditions. unknown

1917rif. List38101Boston Massachusetts: Daly Music Publisher Inc 1917. Four-page sheet music measuring 10 ½ x 13 ½ inches. Worn especially at edges wrinkled and with a few areas of tape or tape residue covering tears; good. Sheet music for lyricist Jack Caddigan and composer James Brennan's 1917 novelty song "Mister Edison Is Working On It Now." The song expresses that Americans are unworried about the new technology involved in fighting the First World War because "They're the product of American brains" and that Edison would soon invent a device to "fool the German submarine." It also mentions somewhat incongruously that Edison has "got a plan / To help the married man / That he's found how to keep a woman still." Edison himself was an advocate of preparedness and had stated that new technology developed for war would soon be destructive beyond imagining.1 We find six copies in OCLC across different entries. 1 "Thomas Edison in World War I" Thomas Edison National Historical Park New Jersey National Park Service February 26 2015 https://www.nps.gov/edis/learn/historyculture/thomas-edison-in-world-war-i.htm. . Light uniform browning; occasional minor foxing and small stains; signatures loose. Third edition. OCLC 20912723. A compilation of traditional Swiss folk songs and occasional instrumental selections including music for the Alphorn and solo piano compositions many arranged by Ferdinand Fürchtegott Huber. The alphorn was a "wooden trumpet of pastoral communities in the Alps. . The commonest length of the alphorn is about 185 cm in which case its range extends to the 5th or 6th harmonic as quoted by Beethoven at the end of the Pastoral Symphony. . Alphorns were known best as herdsmen's calling instruments serving also in some areas to summon to church and formerly to war. They may also be numinous: among the Mari of Russia the long wooden trumpet is made for the spring festival and afterwards sacrificially burnt or hidden in a sacred place. Overall likeness in making and using alphorns and their distribution suggest that they possibly may have originated among post-Celtic peoples of the Migration Era. There is no firm evidence of prior existence; 'cornu alpinus' in Tacitus is less than proof of a wooden trumpet of which the earliest specimen from the 9th-century Oseberg ship Oslo Vikingskiphuset supports iconographic suggestions that wooden trumpets of moderate size were used as summoning and military instruments in early medieval northern Europe in addition to their pastoral functions." Anthony C. Baines revised by Max Peter Baumann in Grove Music Online. Rossini evoked the Alphorn in his iconic 1829 William Tell Overture. Of great importance to the preservation of the oral heritage of Swiss alpine herders. J. J. Burgdorfer unknown
