1850réf. 4694Devilish Burlesque - Poetry Illustrated DUBOULOY A. Amphigouri diabolique. Satirical pencil drawings based on text by Pierre-Jean de Beranger. Paris ca 1850.£3800 Oblong 4to ll. 6 225 x 300mm of pencil drawings undated ca 1825/1830; title with old repair to marginal tear not touching the illustration some light foxing and a little dust-soiled; inscription in ink on front free endpaper 'vente a Dubouloy dessiné par lui'; later half red crushed morocco over red cloth spine in compartments gilt lettering directly to spine 'Amphigouri'; with two book plates to front pastedown: M Ch. Duplomb and the exlibris of Lucienne Corneux Filloux bookplate engraved by Decaris. Six fine original pencil drawings depicting an array of comical devilish figures involved in burlesque acts to illustrate Béranger's erotic poem Amphigouri. Pierre-Jean de Béranger 1780 - 1857 was a prolific French poet and chansonnier who enjoyed great popularity and influence in France during the period of the Restoration. He found fame with his first published collection of songs and poems in 1815 Chansons morales et autre. His material was greatly in demand in in the singing societies or 'goguettes' which sprang up during the Restoration and the July Monarchy as a means of circumventing censorship laws and the ban on political parties. He was a highly successful performer of his own songs and thus an ancestor of post war French chansonniers. He has been described as the most 'popular songwriter of all time' and 'the first superstar of French popular music' L. Portis French Frenzie. A Social History of Popular Music in France' 2004 pp. 11ff. These six pencil drawings were produced in his lifetime and dedicated to him by the artist A. Dubuloy. Dubouloy has deliberately given Berenger's Amphigouri a 'diabolical' twist and depicts his figures within the gaping mouth of the Devil. The illustrations were apparently never published. n.p.

Pierre-Jean de Béranger "The Most Popular French Songwriter of All Time" "The First Superstar of French Popular Music" A presentation copy inscribed by Béranger to Rangot accompanied by a one-page autograph letter from Rangot and an original pencil sketch of Béranger by Monnier MONNIER Henri illustrator. First edition. A presentation copy inscribed by Béranger to Rangot accompanied by a one-page autograph letter from Rangot dated 21 August 1831 and an original pencil sketch of Béranger by Henri Monnier dated 16 August 1831 pasted on the verso of the title-page. Extra-illustrated by the insertion of eighty-six engraved plates on India paper mounted throughout by or after such artists as Bellangé Boilly Boulanger Charlet Devéria Fragonard Grandville Grenier Isabey Johannot Monnier Scheffer Vernet and Delacroix. Two octavo volumes 8 13/16 x 5 1/2 inches; 225 x 140 mm. iv 1-192 iv preface 193-439 1 blank 2 2-7 Biographie du Citoyen Béranger; iv 1-433 1 blank 435-438 pp. With an original pencil sketch by Monnier pasted onto the verso of the first title-page. Illustrated with thirty-three of forty superb hand-colored lithographs by Henri Monnier and numerous vignette wood-engravings by Achille Devéria. Seven plates not included: nos. 21 26 28 31 35 37 and 39 as noted by Carteret III p.272 these particular plates are "very often missing". These seven missing plates are highlighted below within the listing of all 40 plates. Bound ca. 1828 by R. Hering & Muller volume 2 stamp-signed in gilt at foot of spine in half dark blue scored calf spines elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt marbled endpapers edges uncut. A wonderful and important copy. Provenance: With two bookplates of M.A. Tessier Architecte: his engraved ex-libris with oak wreath vol. I verso of front free endpaper and the Tessier family armorial bookplate Semper Progrediens - "Ever Forward" on the front pastedowns of both volumes. "The forty drawings by Henri Monnier lithographed with a pen on stone and colored with a brush are very rare complete. Seven of these lithographs are often missing they are: The Court Dress The Exile The Good Old Man The Marquise of Pretintaille The Flight of Love The Voyager The two Grenadiers." Carteret III p. 72. The signed presentation translated reads: "Nothing more ridiculous for an author than to write something at the head of his works; but an admirable obstinacy obliges me here to obey. - Béranger". An ironic comment on the absurdity of authors inscribing their own books. The Autograph Letter Signed "Rangot" 21 Aug. 1831 translated reads: "Dear and precious friend. the amiable good Béranger will do all you wish and has promised to honor me with a visit or two. I hope that the bonds of friendship will soon bring me the happiness of seeing you. Your poor very devoted but true friend Rangot. Paris 21 August 1831 Grande rue No. 81." With a postscript in Italian: "A thousand thousand respects to your amiable kind and good wife to whom I wish a child who in all things will resemble the father." The signatory to the Als. "Rangot" leaves open the possibility of "Ragot." No individual of that exact name is recorded among Béranger's principal circle of publishers chansonniers or correspondents. It is therefore probable that "Rangot" was a minor literary or personal acquaintance acting as an intermediary arranging introductions to the poet at a time 1831 just after the July Revolution when Béranger's fame and political sensitivity made such mediation necessary. While one could tentatively connect the name with Louis-François Ragot 1782-1857 a Parisian man of letters active in minor journals of the period this identification remains unverified in standard bibliographies Vicaire Escoffier Carteret or collections of Béranger's correspondence. The original Pencil Sketch of Béranger signed and captioned dated 16 August 1831 by Henri Monnier. Reads: "Béranger the poet looking at the statue of Guillaume le Conquérant by the sculptor Archereau at the Champs-Élysées." With annotation: "I made this sketch of Béranger with all the possible politeness and convenience; it was impossible for me to take his face but from the back he gave me a good profile. I placed myself in a corner where I could see him well hidden for a poet who deserves to be observed must be carefully preserved." "Monnier also illustrated Béranger's Chansons creating numerous series over time that reflect his admiration for Béranger's work. His lithographs and early watercolors despite their small size demonstrate his extreme finesse and simplicity. Monnier's bright flat colors encircled by precise pen or pencil strokes bring his subjects to life with values and shadows indicated by more or less dense hatching. Some watercolors from this period appear almost as pen drawings enhanced with color due to the prominence of the pen work." Marie. Pierre-Jean de Béranger 1780-1857 was a prolific French poet and chansonnier songwriter who enjoyed great popularity and influence in France during his lifetime but faded into obscurity in the decades following his death. He has been described as "the most popular French songwriter of all time" and "the first superstar of French popular music". The Chansons were composed with fastidious care and are most notable for their clarity wit and incisiveness however the socialist and revolutionary content of his songs resulted in several brushes with the authorities resulting in his nine month incarceration in La Force Prison. Pierre-Jean de Béranger was the most celebrated songwriter political poet and popular literary figure of nineteenth-century France. His chansons were sung not only in theaters and cafés but in workshops military barracks taverns and private drawing rooms throughout the country becoming inseparable from everyday French life. Combining lyrical elegance with wit patriotism and fearless political commentary Béranger exercised an influence unmatched by any French popular poet of his generation. His repeated prosecutions and imprisonment under the Bourbon Restoration only increased his fame transforming him into the literary voice of liberal France and one of the defining cultural figures of the nineteenth century. The present work has long been regarded as the greatest illustrated edition of Béranger's songs. To accompany the text the publishers assembled two of the foremost artists of the Romantic generation. Achille Devéria supplied hundreds of exquisitely engraved woodcut vignettes that enrich almost every page while Henri Monnier created forty original lithographs that rank among the earliest masterpieces of French Romantic book illustration. Executed with Monnier's characteristic humanity humor and penetrating observation of everyday Parisian life these compositions perfectly complement the spirit of Béranger's verse capturing both its comic brilliance and its emotional warmth. Although complete copies of the illustrated edition are themselves of the utmost rarity the present example belongs to an altogether different order of survival. Not only does it preserve all ten original publisher's livraisons each retaining its fragile printed wrapper - ephemeral elements almost invariably discarded when nineteenth-century subscribers had their parts bound - but it also preserves the publisher's complete duplicate suite of Henri Monnier's forty contemporary hand-colored lithographs likewise retained in their original wrappers exactly as issued. Such duplicate suites were intended for collectors wishing to preserve an additional set of illustrations yet they were almost always separated damaged or discarded during the binding process. We have been unable to trace another copy preserving every original livraison together with both complete contemporary hand-colored suites. The visual effect is simply extraordinary. The contemporary hand-coloring remains remarkably fresh and luminous throughout delicately executed in the finest Parisian manner of the late Restoration. Together the two complete suites comprise eighty original contemporary hand-colored lithographs transforming the work into one of the most spectacular surviving monuments of French Romantic illustrated publishing. The front wrapper of the First Livraison bears the contemporary presentation inscription of the printer and publisher Rignoux providing an unusually appealing contemporary association with the publication itself. Equally remarkable is the survival of every original wrapper preserving the work precisely as subscribers first received it in 1828. Such wrappers rank among the most ephemeral survivals of nineteenth-century publishing and are seldom encountered complete. Henri Monnier's illustrations occupy a pivotal place in the history of French caricature. Produced before the celebrated Scènes Populaires and the works that established him as one of the supreme visual chroniclers of nineteenth-century Paris they reveal an artist already in complete command of expressive characterization theatrical composition and psychological observation. These early lithographs anticipate the qualities that would later influence Honoré Daumier and define an entire generation of French Romantic satirical art. Together with Devéria's refined wood engravings they constitute one of the great achievements of Romantic book illustration. Accompanying the principal work is the scarce first edition of Poniatowski. Hatons-Nous. published in 1831 and preserved like the Chansons in its original printed wrapper. Dedicated to General Lafayette and inspired by the Polish struggle for national independence it reflects the liberal political ideals that permeate so much of Béranger's writing. Its presence provides an exceptionally appropriate contemporary companion to the monumental illustrated edition while further enhancing the historical and bibliographical importance of the collection. Few illustrated books of the Romantic period survive in anything approaching their original published state; fewer still preserve every ephemeral wrapper and virtually none retain the publisher's complete duplicate suite of hand-colored plates. This extraordinary copy preserves not merely Béranger's greatest illustrated work but the entire experience of its publication exactly as nineteenth-century collectors first acquired it. It stands as a landmark of French Romantic literature political history music and illustrated book production and is unquestionably among the finest surviving copies of Henri Monnier's first great lithographic masterpiece. "Monnier also illustrated Béranger's Chansons creating numerous series over time that reflect his admiration for Béranger's work. KVK locates no complete copies.
