Readers musically in tune will recognize many faces here this cataloguer was merely Oooo! Pavarotti! Both Menotti and Fendi make people open up; he for example is the only party host who ever publicly drew out Jackie Onassis' reserve; his congrats to her on RFK's win in the 1968 CA primary was met with her flairing "Why they will just kill him like they killed my husband" a remark that made European media but not here. Small remnants of paper tape on verso else fine. Broadside advertising the twelfth performance of the opera KAIS OR LOVE IN THE DESERTS at Drury Lane starring and produced by the renowned English tenor John Braham. John Braham ca. 1774-1856 rose from poverty and orphanhood in London to the heights of European opera where he celebrated as one of the great voices of his age. As a British Jew he also represented a major shift in Jewish status and social potential in the late Georgian era becoming not only an artist of acclaim but also eventually the father-in-law of several English aristocrats. KAIS was based on the ancient Arabian love story of Layla and Majnun which had been adapted into a famous work by Persian Poet Nizami Ganjavi in the 12th century which in turn became the source for numerous later poets and mystics throughout the Middle East and Central and South Asia. The story gained great popularity in Europe after Isaac DIsraeli published an English translation in the early 19th century. It was upon this translation that Isaac Brandon based the libretto for KAIS. Braham and William Reeve composed the music for the opera which opened in 1807. Lowndes, Printer books

1885Best.-Nr. 140511885. Neurdein Frères Paris Opera circa 1887 to 1890 documents the Palais Garnier and the concentrated carriage and pedestrian traffic surrounding one of the principal public buildings of late nineteenth century Paris. Completed in 1875 the opera house stood within the rebuilt urban landscape of the Second Empire and early Third Republic while the traffic visible before its façade records the everyday movement of people and horse drawn vehicles through the surrounding streets. Albumen print approximately 8 x 11 inches mounted on paper. The view centers on the elaborately ornamented façade of the Palais Garnier with numerous horse drawn carriages and pedestrians filling the foreground and the square before the building. The "X Phot." mark identifies the image with Neurdein Frères who used the mark from 1887. The firm produced extensive photographic views of Paris for circulation as tourist and architectural images including monuments civic buildings streets and other recognizable features of the capital. The combination of monumental architecture and active street traffic preserves both the appearance of the Palais Garnier and the transportation patterns of Paris before the widespread replacement of horse drawn vehicles by motor traffic. A sharp late nineteenth century view combining architectural documentation of the Paris Opera with closely observed evidence of everyday movement through the surrounding urban space. unknown books
