The Subcommittee on Energy Development and Applications House Committee on Science and Technology held hearings in 1981 regarding the direct combustion of coal focusing on its efficiency economic and environmental aspects. While direct combustion remains a primary method for power generation it requires managing emissions NOx SOx and residues. The hearing highlighted this approach as the most efficient and economical way to use coal at the time even with rising interest in synthetic fuels. The hearing addressed the need for clean combustion technologies to handle air quality surface water/groundwater quality and solid waste management. It focused on improving control technologies for precombustion combustion and postcombustion processes to manage emissions of particulates and trace elements. This hearing included discussions evolved to include the management of coal combustion waste including bottom ash boiler slag and fly ash from electrostatic precipitators. Direct combustion of coal is the process of burning coal in boilers to produce heat which is used to generate steam for electricity generation or industrial processes. As the primary method in coal-fired power plants it involves pulverizing coal to a fine powder for efficient combustion. However it releases substantial greenhouse gases pollutants and solid waste with global research aiming for higher efficiency through supercritical technologies. Coal is typically pulverized into a fine powder dried and fed into boilers where it is burned in a controlled high-temperature environment to produce thermal energy. The generated thermal energy produces steam which drives turbines to produce electricity or provides heat for industrial applications. Direct combustion releases large amounts of sulfur dioxide nitrogen oxides soot and heavy metals. These emissions contribute significantly to acid rain smog and climate change. To reduce emissions and increase efficiency new technologies are used including supercritical SC or ultra-supercritical USC pulverized coal combustion which operate at higher temperatures and pressures to achieve up to 50% efficiency. Direct combustion is heavily scrutinized for its high environmental footprint contributing over 15 billion tons of annually. While conventional plants have efficiency rates around 32% advanced technologies are aiming for higher efficiency to reduce emissions per MW produced. U.S. Government Printing Office paperback
