réf. FRE51Folio strap cloth binding ca. 334x227 cm 13 x 9 in. 129 pp. of typewritten text including 2 plats. Previous owners’ pencil inscriptions “T. G. Lindsey” and “Contract. T. J. Davis / R. R. Jinkler Issue” on the front cover and page no. 1. First page with minor tears at the edges but otherwise very good. Abstract of title for “Tract No. 16 in the Fairview Gardens Annex No. 3” today’s 15835 Northwest Fwy Houston Texas documenting a century of Texas land history from the early Republic period through the Great Depression and the Texas Oil Boom. The abstract was compiled by Southern Abstract & Title Co. for Wright Loan & Securities Co. in 1938 apparently to establish clear ownership records for the sale of individual lots and to support the leasing of underground mineral rights during the height of the local drilling rush. The Texas oil boom began with the 1901 discovery of oil at the Spindletop field near Beaumont where a massive gusher transformed Texas into the center of the American petroleum industry. The resulting land rush which continued through the major discoveries of the 1930s compelled owners and developers to meticulously document property boundaries and ownership histories to safely lease mineral rights and avoid costly legal disputes. As follows from the abstract the property's history begins in 1838 when the military bounty land claim of deceased soldier Thomas Hogan established the 1476-acre Hogan Survey Abstract 326. The tract was patented in 1851 and remained in the Brashear family until its first subdivision in 1895. After a series of inheritances and sales the property was reduced to a 73.19-acre parcel before passing to the Wright Loan & Securities Company during the Great Depression which platted the Fairview Gardens Annex No. 3 subdivision in 1933. Amid the Texas oil boom the mineral rights for a 22.35-acre block of the subdivision encompassing the 4.84-acre Tract 16 were leased in 1934 to Ralph A. Johnston and later assigned to Stanolind Oil & Gas Company which later became part of Amoco/BP and Amerada now known as Hess Corporation. During our internet research we discovered that historical drilling records identify the broader 1476-acre Hogan Survey as part of a highly productive natural gas field with the No. 1 Fischer well producing an estimated 11 million cubic feet of gas per day in the 1950s. Modern GIS mapping however confirms that no well was ever drilled on the 4.84-acre Tract 16 itself and instead the parcel was pooled into neighboring drilling units. Today the historic Tract 16 has been absorbed into Houston’s urban sprawl with its modern address 15835 Northwest Fwy Jersey Village now occupied by a municipal Public Works facility directly fronting the Northwest Freeway US-290. The abstract covers the period from 1838 to 1938 presenting a detailed sequence of early Texas notary-certified documents that trace the legal history of the tract. It opens with two rare original plats: one showing the division of the original Thomas Hogan Survey into twelve tracts and another detailing the wedge-shaped Fairview Gardens Annex No. 3 subdivision highlighting Tract 16. Among the featured documents are letter patents petitions deeds including deeds of trust right-of-way deeds and quitclaim deeds estate documents affidavits releases assignments certified copies of wills earnest money contracts extensions and mineral leases with references to prominent Texas pioneers. Especially interesting is an 1859 application for administration of the estate of Isaac W. Brashear ca. 1811–1859 a Harris County senator which records that he left “an estate consisting of lands negroes and other property.” Documents from the early 1930s include multiple extensions of deeds of trust echoing developers’ desperate efforts to avoid foreclosure during the Great Depression. Another important 1934 “Assignment of Oil and Gas Lease” records Ralph A. Johnston’s transfer of drilling rights on a 22.35-acre tract to Stanolind Oil & Gas Company and Amerada Petroleum Corporation shortly after securing the lease. This decision likely reflected the applier’s attempt to capitalize on the oil boom and generate urgently needed funds. The folder concludes with a notarized certificate from Southern Abstract & Title Company confirming the accuracy of the abstract. Overall historically important abstract documenting a century of Texas land history from the early Republic period through the Great Depression and the Texas Oil Boom. hardcover

réf. 66270August 1963 with revisions up to May 1981. Original cyanotype map 115.5 x 84 cm. Some light dampstaining and wrinkling folds a bit toned and with some nicks some repaired with archival tape generally very good. The map covers from the contemporary Saudi-Kuwaiti Neutral Zone in the north to Qatar in the south. Villages roads paved unpaved and 'of questionable permanency' terrain including sabkhahs or saltflats water wells and intermittent waterways or wadis are indicated throughout according to the symbols and lines in the legend to the left of the title. The main focus is on oil and gas fields and related infrastructure including oil wells gas wells injection wells pipelines plants triangulation stations and power lines. A great number of local place names are transliterated and the boundaries of both onshore and offshore oil fields are traced including the Dammam and Ghawar Fields and the offshore Safaniya Field. Several locations important to the industry are shaded brown and handwritten annotations denoting pipelines appear near Al-Hofuf and Abqaiq. At the bottom right is an inset map of the Shaybah Oil Field and environs on the disputed Saudi border with Abu Dhabi. The remote location was only developed in the 1990s with the eponymous settlement of Shaybah being built and Aramco bringing the project on-stream in 1998 with a pipeline linking to Abqaiq. This map was first issued in 1963 a transformative era for the eastern coast of Arabia as oil exploration shifted from desert sands to the waters of the Persian Gulf. Building on the early success of Safaniya at center-top here the world's largest offshore field discovered in the 1950s operators leveraged rapid advancements in marine drilling technology to unlock vast undersea reserves. This decade witnessed a flurry of landmark discoveries including Saudi Arabia's Zuluf 1965 and Marjan 1967 Fields at top here just to the left of the title and legend. The momentum towards offshore drilling accelerated through the 1970s and early 1980s a period fundamentally reshaped by skyrocketing oil prices and resource nationalism. Following the 1973 Oil Crisis regional governments aggressively transitioned from concession agreements with foreign majors to full state ownership giving rise to state-controlled giants like the nationalized Saudi Aramco. This map was initially prepared by Aramco in 1963 then updated repeatedly in the following years a full list of updates is noted to the left of the title with the present example being an update of May 31 1981. It was drawn by one Whb Aid presumably an abbreviation of a surveyor's name. We are only aware of one example of this map in any edition in institutional collections a 1971 update held at the Library of Congress. August 1963, with revisions up to May 1981. unknown

1845réf. fremont1845houseFirst House edition of this famous report. 1845. Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction $25 extra if desired. Pagination: 583 pages 22 plates 4 maps all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren Co. Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere see scan. Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing. Howes F372; Wagner-Camp 115:2; Graff 1436. House Doc. No. 166. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you will receive. Note: the large map published in 1845 was the road map people used in the gold rush of 1849. It was routinely extracted hence its rare nature. Map is 52 x 32 inches. Furthermore I do not believe map was issued with all House editions which contributes even more to its scarcity. Map is sufficiently large that if it had ever been present there would be evidence of removal. No evidence it was ever in this volume. House of Representatives. Blair and Rives. hardcover
1921réf. 6148Various locations 1921. Very good. Twelve leaves with 106 photographs. Images a mix of 4.25 x 2.5 and 5.5 x 3.5 inches. Oblong quarto. Original black cloth string tied. Black paper leaves photos glued down. Images captioned in ink throughout on the photo. Minor wear. An interesting photographic record of drilling for oil in Wyoming and Montana. The images which are all captioned in a useful fashion depict oil rigs and wells the drillers at work and occasionally the family's on whose land they are drilling. The album opens with images from Upton Wyoming. Upton is located in the northeast corner of the state near Deadwood South Dakota; its newspaper offices burned down in 1926 leaving few early records of the town. Images depict the boiler "to go on School Sec 16"; the Gose home and oil field as well as the Goses; as well as rigs identified as ready to move from one site to another. Several images later in the album depict an accident on the Gose field which decapitated Vernie Moody -- two images show an X on the spot where he died under the depicted wreckage. Other images show work at Osage Gillette and Salt Creek Wyoming including one of a gushing well at Salt Creek in 1921. Images of work at the Broadview Dome near Billings Montana indicate "no oil near here" and "their well my test." There are also some nice views of Main Street in Harding Montana and Gillette Wyoming. A brief but fascinating and insightful glimpse of the oil life in the northern plains. unknown
