LYELL (Kinnordy 1797 - Londra 1875), scozzese, geologo, amico di Darwin; attivo anche in Italia. Nel suo capolavoro "Principles of Geology" (qui riportato in ital. come apparve anticipato in Quarterly Review, n. 56 ott. 1830, ma poi uscito in 2 voll. nello stesso anno) sviluppò nella sua versione definitiva la teoria dell'uniformitarismo, concepita inizialmente da James Hutton, ponendo le basi della moderna geologia. I due spessi fascicoli in-8° (cm. 22,8x14,2), brossure editoriale ornate (mende e ai dorsifessura al fasc. di dic., gualciture ai piatti, ma immacolati gli interni ancora intonsi, sono completi delle loro 160 + 180 pagine e contengono inoltre: 1) Charles BABBAGE, Sulla decadenza delle scienze in Inghilterra (65 pagine, completo in 2 puntate).
