In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique" 4e Series - Tome 15. 512 pp. a. 3 folded engraved plates. The entire volume offered. Janssen's memoir: pp. 414-426. First appearance of this milestone paper in chemistry physics and astronomy announcing the discovery of the helium lines in the spectrum of the sun. It was Lockyer in the same year that named it 'helium' for Helios the Greek God of the Sun. Helium was not discovered on the earth before 1895 by William Ramsay and it was Crookes who established its identity with the helium Janssen and Lockyer observed in the spectrum of the sun."He Janssen met immortality by travelling to India in 1868 to study the total eclipse. It was then that he observed the helium line and forwarded the spectral data to ockyer. He also noted the size of the solar prominences. The day after the eclipse he attempted to take their spectra again and succeeded despite the absence of the obscuring moon. he then announced jubilantly that it was the day after the eclipse that was the real eclipse day for him. Lockyer also reported this method of studying prominences without an eclipse.Like Lockyer he lived to see his observation of the helium line vindicated by Ramsay's discovery of that element on earth."Asimov."This the discovery of helium lines in the sun by Lockyer was announced on the same day by the French astronomer Janssen who was in India observing a total eclipse. As a result the French government some ten years later struck a medallion showing the heads of both scientists.By that time the two men had made a much more dramatic discovery at the same time this time in cooperation. Janssen studying the spectrum ofthe sun during the eclipse had noted a fine line he did not recognize. he send a report on this to Lockyer an acknowledges expert on solar spectra. Lockyer compared the reported position of the line with lines of known elements concluding that it must belong to a yeat unknown element possibly not even existing on the earth. He named the element from the Greek word for the sun."Asimov.Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1868 A. - The volume contains other notable papers by Dumas Berthelot et al. hardcover

ref. 404935New York: Harry N. Abrams 1979. A near-fine copy in a like jacket pale stain to cloth on upper panel the jacket with minute wear. Square 4to 8 x 8 inches; 203 x 203 mm. 48 pages. Full-page color offset prints. Original cloth; dust jacket. FIRST EDITION inscribed by Lewitt on the front free endpaper in pencil to "Ann." Uncommon in the cloth-bound issue and especially so when signed. Lewitt conceptually explores: "Circle Square Triangle Rectangle Trapezoid and Parallelogram in Red Yellow and Blue on Red Yellow and Blue." The book is divided into three sections each of which differ by background color. Barbara M. Reise wrote that "LeWitt's colours like his lines and squares are like 'facts': they are inert pre-established accepted and un-emotional man-made constructs which can 'come to life' within a present context but do not necessarily do so. Red yellow blue and black and the white of wall or paper are standard "absolute primaries basic to all pigment colour – that is according to the colour system accepted by an art academic from early 19th-century theorists like Chevreul. Unlike the Newtonian rainbow-spectrum based on light-waves this theoretical structure is more conceptually mathematical and tautological than referential to some exterior and inhuman Nature. LeWitt's use of these colours is as flatly complete physical and self-reflective as the theory itself. Unlike Seurat whose use of the same colour theories was subordinated and interrelated to other interests in proportion theories and seen scene subject-matter LeWitt uses colour as both the subject and the object of his art" in: 'Sol Lewitt Critical Texts' ed. Missing volume #7. Each volume includes a printed table of contents on the interior front cover and publication information on the interior back cover. Illustrated publisher's device on the back covers. Volume 1 includes images of the flag of the Republic of China printed lithographically in blue and red as well as a b/w photo-reproduction portrait of Sun Yat-Sen. A nearly complete but mixed set of Sun Yat-Sen's "Three Principles of the People" issued as an illustrated reader for elementary school children. These were originally published in 8 volumes by the pioneering Commercial Press in Shanghai which is considered the earliest modern publisher in China. The volumes contain b/w lithographically printed images and figures meant to illustrate the political philosophy of Sun Yat-Sen the cornerstone of the nation's policy for the Republic of China. The first and third volumes here are from the later edition of the work likely issued in the later half of 1932 21st year of the Republic in the wake of the January 28 incident or Shanghai incident. During the conflict among the locations bombed and destroyed by the Japanese were the Commercial Press and its famed Oriental Library. The illustrated scene of bombed-out buildings on the cover of these volumes seem to depict that scene and serve a commemoration of those events. The covers of the other volumes being from the earlier edition 1927 show a striking image of a group of young children reading in front of a rising sun printed in black and orange. Wrappers of volumes with some minor to light rubbing. Minor to light stains and age toning to the covers of a few volumes. The first and third volumes with small tears night the top corner and the head of the spine. This is one of 1000 copies printed all of which were numbered ours is no. 924 there were also 500 copies signed by LeWitt. 49 three-part variations… was published by the Zurich gallerist Bruno Bischofberger with whom LeWitt had his first solo presentation in February-March 1968. Bischofberger along with Konrad Fischer and Heiner Friedrich was one of the earliest European gallerists to engage and collaborate with LeWitt and other Conceptual artists. “Following Serial Project #1 ‘The Xerox Book’ and Set II A I-24 Sol LeWitt’s fourth book is 49 Three-Part Variations… which was published in 1969 and is large and oblong in shape its proportions being two squares wide by one square high. This doubling of the square format is approximately repeated with other books such as Schematic Drawings for Muybridge II 1964 of 1970 Open Geometric Structures… of 1979 and All Four Part Combinations of Six Geometric Figures of 1980. In each case the horizontal format is dictated by the content. 49 Three-Part Variations… is the second of LeWitt’s autonomous artist's books and again is not an exhibition catalogue but more a catalogue of forms.”–Clive Phillpot “Sol LeWitt’s Books: Complete & Incomplete” in Booktrek: Selected Essays on Artists’ Books 1972-2010 2013 p. 261.
