Hardcover 256 pages 108 illustrations New condition.FURTHERMORE is a major new book published to mark Fraenkel Gallery’s thirtieth year. With ninety-nine photographs by artists as wide-ranging as Diane Arbus Andy Warhol Robert Adams Bernd & Hilla Becher Sol LeWitt Lee Friedlander Hiroshi Sugimoto and Irving Penn FURTHERMORE is an eye-opening expedition through the history of the medium. In the tradition of Fraenkel Gallery’s award-winning and sought-after anniversary publications from years past FURTHERMORE also includes a trove of images by Photographers Unknown all of which according to the book’s introduction by Jeffrey Fraenkel “fall squarely into the ‘we know them when we see them’ category.” Designed by Katy Homans and printed with extraordinary fidelity by Meridian Printing FURTHERMORE is a meditation on the inexplicable essence of the medium and an essential new publication for anyone who cares seriously about art and photography.Among the most remarkable photographs to be included in FURTHERMORE is Morton Schamberg’s 1918 Dada masterpiece “God.” Believed to be the only print in existence “God” is a study of a cast iron plumbing fixture mounted to a wooden base. Regarded as a sister piece to Marcel Duchamp’s infamous “Fountain” a readymade of an upended urinal from the same year there is uncertainty about who first conceived of transforming plumbing into art. Schamberg died suddenly during the 1918 Philadelphia influenza epidemic age 38. San Francisco: Fraenkel Gallery, 2010. hardcover

The first in-depth exploration of the artistic and cultural achievements of China’s classical era Age of Empires presents the art and culture of China during one of the most critical periods of its history - the four centuries from 221 B.C. to A.D. 200-- when for the first time people of diverse backgrounds were brought together under centralized imperial rule that fostered a new and unified identity. The Qin and Han empires represent the classical era of Chinese civilization coinciding in both importance and timing with the Greco-Roman period in the West. Under the short-lived Qin and centuries-long Han warring principalities were united under a common emperor creating not only political and intellectual institutions but also the foundation for a Chinese art culture and national identity that lasted over two millennia. Over 150 works from across the full breadth of Chinese artistic and decorative media-- including ceramics metalwork textiles armor sculpture and jewelry - are featured in this book and attest to the unprecedented role of art in ancient Chinese culture. These stunning objects among them soldiers from the renowned terracotta army of Qin Shihuang China s first emperor are drawn from institutions and collections in China and appear here together for the first time. Essays by leading scholars accompanied by dazzling new photography of the objects address the sweeping societal changes underway and trace a progression from the early formative years through unprecedented sophistication and technical accomplishment. ref. B9780761837800Paperback / softback. New. Minority invisibility has gone unnoticed in the communication discipline. It denies the existence of racial problems by consciously or unconsciously downplaying ignoring or over-simplifying the issues. This is evidenced from the claims of color-blindness and reverse discrimination the belief in model minorities and exaggerated negative or purposeful racial displays that permeate American culture. Using in-depth interviews with Asian-American professionals from various metropolitan areas this study investigates these professionals' perceptions on minority invisibility and model minority status. It explores Asian Americans' ethnic consciousness on four levels discussing how the group perceives their individual invisibility their group members' invisibility the invisibility of other American co-cultural groups and finally their expectations in changing minority invisibility in the United States. The work considers diverse viewpoints on minority invisibility model minority satisfaction and dissatisfaction with mainstream American culture and co-cultural ethnic relations. This study is useful to graduate and undergraduate students and researchers with an interest in race relations Asian-American studies co-cultural theory and intercultural communication studies. paperback

In this study Jiabao Sun asks: who are the winners and who are the losers in this process This book uses two case studies of different modes of state-led rural urbanization - in the villages of Tianjin and Zhejiang - in order to assess the impact on the livelihoods of the villagers as well as the success of the development initiatives. By focusing on the villagers capabilities assets and support provided this study examines the imbalances of rural redistribution at three levels: among social groups among villages and between the rural-urban divide. paperback
