El yute, fibra obtenida de la "corchorus capsularis", de orígen bengalí, fue introducida en Europa en la década 1740-1750, para la fabricación de cordelería y sacos. En España se denomió al principio "Cáñamo de Bengala", "cuerda de mestas", "estopa" y "arpillera".
