1876Best.-Nr. BK0068San Francisco 1876. Illustrated advertising cover franked with a three-cent Bank Note issue and mailed to Syracuse New York. 6 x 3 ½ inches. Very good condition with expected postal wear and light soiling. An attractive San Francisco advertising cover for the Davis Vertical Feed Sewing Machine promoting one of the more distinctive American sewing machine mechanisms of the period. The cover was issued by Mark Sheldon general agent for the company at 735 Post Street and contains a small illustration of the machine and a lengthy advertisement printed across the reverse. The advertisement emphasizes the Davis machine's patented vertical-feed mechanism contrasting it with conventional machines in which the needle and feed operated separately. Davis claimed that its system moved the fabric while the needle remained in the work allowing it to pass over seams and ridges without puckering or uneven feeding. The company promoted the machine extensively during the 1870s and 1880s and surviving trade literature emphasizes the same technical advantages.1 The text further notes awards received by the Davis machine including the Scott Medal in 1875 and a Grand Medal at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876. Sheldon's San Francisco agency gives the piece an additional western commercial context at a moment when sewing machine manufacturers were expanding aggressively through regional agents. 1 "Advertisement for the Davis Vertical Feed Sewing Machine The Davis Sewing Machine Co.
