1849réf. 26050Title: Two Lives; or To Seem and To Be. Author: McINTOSH Maria J. Author of "Charms and Counter-Charms" "Aunt Kitty's Tales" "Conquest and Self-Conquest" etc. Publisher: New York: D. Appleton & Company 200 Broadway / Philadelphia: Geo. S. Appleton 164 Chestnut Street. Date: 1849 M DCCC XLIX Edition: Early Appleton Standard Issue / Seventh Thousand / Double-Signed Familial Provenance Copy. Language: English Format: Small Octavo 8vo approx. 18.5 x 12.0 cm. Condition Report & Description: An exceptional entirely unrestored mid-19th-century American survival in outstanding original condition. Bound in the publisher's original uniform full brown/aubergine fine-ribbed cloth. Both boards are magnificently decorated with an elaborate crisp central medallion featuring an interlocking Gothic/Moorish geometric strapwork frame enclosed within sweeping botanical corners stamped cleanly in blind. Spine remains completely stable and unchipped with its original gilt-stamped title. The binding is structurally tight firm and perfectly square retaining its original vibrant yellow-coated endpapers in a completely stable uncracked state. Internally very good; text block collates complete 262 pages followed by multi-page publisher's promotional catalogues including the targeted "Interesting Books for Ladies" registry. The leaves display uniform light-to-moderate scattered brown foxing entirely characteristic of mid-century American paper stock but remain flat crisp and completely free of modern annotations or text underlining. Provenance & Association Significance: From the historic Civil Collection of Lavigny Château de Lavigny inventory. This volume carries an extraordinary dual-generation domestic provenance chain documenting its journey within the prominent de La Rive family. The half-title page features a formal multi-line ink ownership registry executed entirely in the hand of the celebrated Genevan physicist Prof. Auguste de La Rive: "Mme A. de la Rive / Maison de la Rive / Genève / Suisse" cataloging the book into the primary urban townhouse library in Geneva for his first wife the English-born author Jeanne-Mathilde Duppa 1808–1850. Crucially the previous blank flyleaf page carries the signature of their daughter "Adèle de la Rive" executed in a fluid elegant late-adolescent script shortly after her mother's untimely death in 1850 and prior to her own 1852 marriage. This signature documents Adèle actively claiming her late mother's copy for her personal collection and subsequently bringing it with her to the Château de Lavigny library. Read alongside her collection of progressive American female authors—most notably the pioneering scientist horticulturist and utopian writer Mary Griffith—McIntosh's text provided a vital ideological framework. The novel's core theme fiercely advocates for practical capable female autonomy "To Be" over superficial societal compliance "To Seem". This book stands as an irreplaceable material record of the progressive transatlantic literary curation that directly shaped Adèle's mind laying the psychological and administrative foundations for her subsequent sovereign management and radical structural improvement of the Tronchin estate after 1873. Deux Vies : ou Paraître et Être. Auteur : McINTOSH Maria J. Auteur de " Charms and Counter-Charms " " Aunt Kitty's Tales " etc. Éditeur : New York : D. Appleton & Company / Philadelphia : Geo. S. Appleton. Date : 1849 M DCCC XLIX Édition : Ancienne édition Appleton Mention de "Seventh Thousand" / Double provenance familiale croisée. Langue : Anglais Format : In-octavo In-8 d'environ 185 x 120 cm.
