1978Fine English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English and list of characters in Chinese. 294 p. A type index of Chinese folktales: In the oral tradition and major works of non-religious classical literature (FF Communications No. 223). Nai-Tung Ting's work on the Chinese folktale provides an interesting example in this regard. At a cursory investigation, the work appears to have been done impeccably. It is bearing testimony to the high level of scholarly asceticism that has characterized so many of those who have fallen under the shadow of the Finnish Academy. The indexing system is efficiently laid out and easy to use. It lends itself readily to eventual computerization and will undoubtedly save all the research headaches and frustrations it has been arranged to. For this it merits the highest praise, as also for the actual amount of material that the author has gathered up and sifted through for us. The bibliography runs to well over 700 entries, many of them sizable volumes or collections running to several volumes. It is composed almost entirely of twentieth century editions up until 1973. Given the breadth and depth of the nation with the world's largest population, and probably also the largest active folk tradition, we have reason to be grateful for efforts such as this. (In a nice flourish of conscientious apologetics, the author even informs us that one particular source had to be skimmed through quickly because the poor quality of the copy hurt his eyes!)

Turkish folk tales were collected from the mouths of the Turkish peasantry by the Hungarian savant Dr. Ignatius Kunos, during his travels through Anatolia, 1887 and published for the first time in 1889 by the well-known Hungarian Literary Society," A Kisfaludy Tarsasag," under the Title of Torok Nepmesek ("Turkish Folk Tales"), with an introduction by Professor Vambery. Skazka o Çare saltane; o s'ne ego, Slavnom i mogucem bogatire kniaze gvidone saltanovice i o prekrasnoi charevne lebedi. This is a late 19th century edition. First Edition in 1831. [= The tale of Tsar Saltan]. The Tale of Tsar Saltan, of His Son the Renowned and Mighty Bogatyr Prince Gvidon Saltanovich, and of the Beautiful Princess-Swan is an 1831 fairy tale in verse which is also a Pushkin-inspired opera by Dargomyzhsky and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1900. As a folk tale it is classified as Aarne-Thompson type 707 for its dancing water, singing apple and speaking bird. The story is about three sisters. The youngest is chosen by Tsar Saltan (Saltán) to be his wife. He orders the other two sisters to be his royal cook and weaver. They become jealous of their younger sister. When the tsar goes off to war, the tsaritsa gives birth to a son, Prince Gvidon (Gvidón.) The older sisters arrange to have the tsaritsa and the child sealed in a barrel and thrown into the sea. The sea takes pity on them and casts them on the shore of a remote island, Buyan. The son, having quickly grown while in the barrel, goes hunting. He ends up saving an enchanted swan from a kite bird. The swan creates a city for Prince Gvidon to rule, but he is homesick, so the swan turns him into a mosquito to help him. In this guise, he visits Tsar Saltan's court, where he stings his aunt in the eye and escapes. Back in his realm, the swan gives Gvidon a magical squirrel. But he continues to pine for home, so the swan transforms him again, this time into a fly. In this guise Prince Gvidon visits Saltan's court again and he stings his older aunt in the eye. The third time, the Prince is transformed into a bumblebee and stings the nose of his grandmother. OCLC has not this edition. Scarce.

Ziya Gökalp, whose real name is Mehmet Ziya was born on March 23,1876 in Diyarbair. Ziya Gökalp started his education in Diyarbakir, and moved to Istanbul in 1895 to attend the school for veterinary medicine. During this stage of his life, he met important political figures of the era such as Ibrahim Temo and Ishak Sukûti. He was much influenced by the Young Turks movement and joined the political reform movement Ittihat ve Terakki (Committee of Union and Progress). He was arrested in 1898 because of his dissident activities and spent a year in prison. After his release, he was sent to exile to Diyarbakir where he worked on a minor governmental assignments. After the declaration of the second constitutional monarchy, he established a branch of Ittihat ve Terakki in Diyarbakir, and became its representative. He published the Peyman newspaper. In 1909, he attended the Ittihat ve Terakki Congress held in Thessalonica as the Diyarbakir delegate. The next year, he was elected member to the central administrative council of this organization in Thessalonica. He taught sociology courses in Ittihat Terakki's school, which he had helped establish in 1910. In the mean time, he also published the Genç Kalemler periodical. In 1912, he was elected as a representative of Ergani Maden to the Meclis-i Mebusan (Parliament), and he moved to Istanbul. He was also one of the founders of the association Türk Ocagi (The Turkish Hearth). He wrote about nationalism and Turkish nationalism in the publication of this association Turk Yurdu, and in many other publications such as Halka Dogru, Islam Mecmuasi, Milli Tetebbular Mecmuasi, Iktisadiyat Mecmuasi, Içtimaiyat Mecmuasi and Yeni Mecmua. In the mean time, he taught sociology at the Darülfünun-u Osmani (Istanbul University). During the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Ziya Gökalp sought to fashion a new national identity. In essence, his philosophy consisted of the effort of synthesizing the ethical and cultural values native to Turkish society, and certain values borrowed from the west. He summarized this approach as 'becoming Turkish, Muslim, and modern', and he took the cultural component from Turkish nationalism, and the ethical component from Islam. Gokalp defended that the constructive element of international culture were national cultures and he gave priority to folk literature over court literature. He believed in the importance of positive sciences, which had made the technological and scientific development of the West possible and considered religion as an auxiliary element on the way to reach religious and social unity. His social model was influenced by Emile Durkheim's theoretical concept of 'solidarism'. He opted for this model because unlike liberalism, which was based on the individual, and Marxism, which was based on class struggle, solidarism considered vocational organizations as the essential social unit. He wrote countless articles explaining his social and political views, and he systematized the concept of Turkish nationalism. He played an important role in the establishment and the development of Turkish national literature. In spite of the verse works and the poetry that he wrote in defense of Turkish nationalism, recent history Turkish cultural tends to acknowledge him more as a figure of political struggle. Ziya Gökalp earned great respect on the basis of his life of political activism. Leaving an indelible mark on the development of Turkish national identity, Gokalp died on October 25, 1924 as a citizen of the newly founded Republic of Turkey.
