1841ref. 197091841. Pennsylvania Mathematic Education 19th-Century Handwritten Arithmetic Notebook from Bucks County Pennsylvania. Manuscript arithmetic notebook comprising 48 handwritten pages approximately 12 × 7½ inches executed by Isaac Fluck of Bucks County Pennsylvania between December 1841 and 1842. Fluck was born in 1826 making him approximately sixteen years old when he compiled these pages during his high-school education. The volume is systematically organized with clear subject headings at the top of each leaf - such as "English Money" "Cloth Measure" "Addition of Federal Money" and "Compound Division" - followed by worked examples written computations and applied problem sets. A recurring emphasis on conversions measurements and multi-step arithmetic underscores the practical education valued in mid-nineteenth-century America. The notebook is distinguished by its preservation of authentic word problems that illustrate how mathematical instruction was tied to everyday concerns. One problem asks the learner to "Subtract 36 acres 2 rods from 900 acres 3 rods 16 perches" while another records multi-digit subtraction including "Subtract fifteen thousand five hundred and nine from twenty thousand six hundred and fifty four." Other entries show Fluck reducing long measures - from leagues to miles and furlongs to poles - and calculating "simple subtraction" with large numbers evidencing both the student's increasing confidence and the curriculum's emphasis on real-world numeracy. The alternating use of black and blue ink throughout the notebook as well as the range of topics addressed indicates ongoing study over months rather than a single session. The breadth of lessons - from federal money and cloth measure to compound multiplication and time calculations - reflects the type of math education offered in preparatory schools of the period. As a student-produced manuscript this notebook offers rare primary evidence of arithmetic pedagogy prior to the widespread adoption of printed textbooks and demonstrates how young Americans were trained in the mathematical skills necessary for commerce trade and measurement in a rapidly developing nation. For institutional collections it provides direct insight into the intellectual life of a teenage student in pre-Civil War Pennsylvania and the material culture of learning in the antebellum United States. Condition: The notebook's covers are detached and some dampstaining and foxing throughout otherwise very good condition. unknown

1730ref. 4255Germany 1730. 4to. Contemporary blind-tooled calf with two clasps J. A. Dortmund's paper shelf mark label on the spine 451 red and blue sprinkled edges. Written in a neat and regular German hand in brown ink the title page with a drawing of a number-triangle decorated with penwork the initials on the title and in the text with elegant penwork often with traces of heightening with gold numerous arithmetical exercises in the text. 175 ll. Attractively produced German manuscript on arithmetic written in a clear and highly legible hand. The text is divided into numerous short chapters each introduced by an elegant calligraphic heading and often accompanied by explanatory notes in a smaller but equally neat script as well as extensive examples and exercises. The manuscript comes from the library of the Dutch dealer and collector Johannes A. Dortmund 1912-1988 renowned for his extensive collection of manuscripts and documents relating to the history of writing and scripts.Beginning with the numerals and the basic principles of arithmetic the work gradually progresses to increasingly advanced operations including addition subtraction multiplication division fractions and the application of more complex computational rules. Among the chapters are: Nummerieren Summieren Subtrahieren Multiplicieren Dividieren the various Regula calculations involving the value and fineness of silver and gold Silber und Gold Rechnung and the four fundamental operations with fractions Species in Brichen. The manuscript further contains numerous carefully arranged lessons and calculations executed with remarkable neatness and consistency. With the bookplate of J.A. Dortmond 1912-1988 mounted on the front pastedown numbered 451. The boards and spine are rubbed the foot of the spine is torn with loss of material one clasp lacking. A water stain in the gutter throughout occasionally affecting a few words lacking the final leaf. Otherwise in good condition. ref. LD6063America 19th Century. Early cloth-covered boards; 13.5 x 8.25 inches; approx. pp. 140 completely full with equations handwritten in ink with calligraphic headings decorated in color. Spine tips chipped with gatherings exposed; corners and edges of boards a bit scuffed; hinges reinforced. Bright and beautiful text block. This unique manuscript volume contains complex arithmetic not often seen in student workbooks of the period such as perpetuities at compound interest foreign exchange insurance commission and brokerage and more -- all of it spectacularly rendered. The simple or complex beauties of mathematical equations and arithmetic sequences are heightened here by the wonderful hand that elegantly carries them out. The penmanship is invariably tidy refined and frequently quite lovely and it is remarkable that the hand which so deftly records the numbers and explanatory text is also capable of such variety in the subject headings -- from exacting almost typographic block Roman letters to ornate serifs that swirl into a whimsical face -- rendered in multiple bright colors and minute detail. Visually striking throughout a distant look at a full page is as rewarding as the close scrutiny of a single element. And rigorous to boot addressing vulgar fractions with promiscuous examples which is so much fun to say geometrical progression annuities ships' tonnage cubic measure and rules -- plenty of rules rules made marvelous. hardcover
