Written in a neat and regular German hand in brown ink the title page with a drawing of a number-triangle decorated with penwork the initials on the title and in the text with elegant penwork often with traces of heightening with gold numerous arithmetical exercises in the text. 175 ll. Attractively produced German manuscript on arithmetic written in a clear and highly legible hand. The text is divided into numerous short chapters each introduced by an elegant calligraphic heading and often accompanied by explanatory notes in a smaller but equally neat script as well as extensive examples and exercises. The manuscript comes from the library of the Dutch dealer and collector Johannes A. Dortmund 1912-1988 renowned for his extensive collection of manuscripts and documents relating to the history of writing and scripts.Beginning with the numerals and the basic principles of arithmetic the work gradually progresses to increasingly advanced operations including addition subtraction multiplication division fractions and the application of more complex computational rules. Among the chapters are: Nummerieren Summieren Subtrahieren Multiplicieren Dividieren the various Regula calculations involving the value and fineness of silver and gold Silber und Gold Rechnung and the four fundamental operations with fractions Species in Brichen. The manuscript further contains numerous carefully arranged lessons and calculations executed with remarkable neatness and consistency.With the bookplate of J.A. Dortmond 1912-1988 mounted on the front pastedown numbered 451. The boards and spine are rubbed the foot of the spine is torn with loss of material one clasp lacking. A water stain in the gutter throughout occasionally affecting a few words lacking the final leaf. Otherwise in good condition. hardcover
