1951réf. 00009519Oxford: At the Clarendon Press 1951. First edition. Hardcover. Very near Fine/Very Good. 8vo. 5 vi-x 3 2-141 3 pp. Bound in navy blue cloth with publisher's device and lettering in gold on the spine. Lukasiewicz first lectured on this topic in Cracow Poland in June of 1939. Unfortunately all of his books and manuscript materials were destroyed by the bombing that occurred during the German invasion of Poland later that year. In 1949 he revisited the topic in a series of lectures delivered at the University of Dublin culminating in the present book. The book is a fascinating exploration of Aristotle's logic through the lens of modern mathematical logic and is still frequently cited in scholarly work on Aristotle. An attractive copy of this important and influential exploration of Aristotle's logic by one of the leading early figures in mathematical logic. A very near Fine book in a Very Good price-clipped dust jacket with mild darkening and a few spots to the spine panel and a closed tear to the bottom of the rear panel. In publishers leather binding. Gilt spine. Notes in ink and pencil in German throughout. Overall in fine condition. First edition. Presentation copy inscribed by the author. With numerous inserted handwritten notes by the author in Polish and English. In publishers leather binding. Gilt spine. 10 2 141 3 p. Inscribed copy of one of Åukasiewicz’s most important works Aristotle’s Syllogistic with several handwritten notes by the author. Jan Lukasiewicz 1878–1956 was a Polish logician and philosopher who introduced mathematical logic into Poland and who was a founding member of the Lwów–Warsaw school of logic which was later made internationally famous by Alfred Tarski and one of the principal architects and teachers of that school. Lukasiewicz is known to give the first rigorous formulation of many-valued logic and for introducing various improvements in propositional logic and for becoming the first historian of logic to treat the subject’s history from the standpoint of modern formal logic. In this work he unfolds the principle of his notation Polish or Åukasiewicz notation which later was used as a basis of the Burroughs B5000 computer and a somewhat modified version the reverse Polish notation is still widely used in computer science. .
