2008brossura Gilbert Strang, studioso internazionalmente noto e apprezzato, ha pubblicato la prima edizione di questo libro quasi trent'anni fa; da allora il testo ha rappresentato un modello di chiarezza ed efficacia espositiva, un riferimento essenziale per l'insegnamento dell'algebra lineare. Questa versione, interamente rivista, è stata notevolmente arricchita nella parte di esempi ed esercizi e aggiornata all'uso del software di calcolo Matlab. L'autore procede privilegiando la comprensione: suo obiettivo primario è far capire il senso profondo dei concetti. A tal fine egli integra astrazione e visualizzazione; affianca al calcolo algebrico l'intuizione geometrica; approfondisce gli aspetti computazionali; si sofferma sulle interazioni con altri ambirti della matematica e sulle applicazioni alla fisica, all'ingegneria e all'economia. In questo modo Strang riesce a farci intuire la bellezza dell'algebra lineare, e al tempo stesso illustra la sua centrale rilevanza nell'ambito della matematica e delle scienze applicate.
