La grande biografia di Jedin dedicata a Girolamo Seripando, tra i protagonisti del Concilio di Trento, per la sua portata teologico-filosofica si può considerare una pietra miliare per comprendere, al di là di chiusure ideologiche, la storia della Chiesa, la dottrina e la storiografia successive. Illuminanti in tal senso le parole di Benedetto Croce, che nel 1937 recensì su "La critica" il primo volume allora uscito: "Con questa monografia del Jedin, la vita e l'opera di Girolamo Seripando ottiene finalmente la trattazione esatta e piena che da molto tempo si desiderava. Il Seripando ebbe una sua parte nel configurare la vita morale e religiosa d'Europa mercè dell'atteggiamento che egli prese e l'azione che esercitò nel Concilio di Trento, nei dibattiti intorno alla dottrina della giustificazione per la fede, punto capitale della divisione dei protestanti dai cattolici. [...] Altri (come il Gothein) notò già che alla formola nata da quelle obiezioni e proposte del Seripando si dovette la possibilità nella Chiesa stessa cattolica di un movimento come il giansenismo, che non fu mai possibile dimostrare eretico. Ora del modo in cui si formò il pensiero del Seripando su questo proposito, e di tutte le particolarità delle discussioni che egli sostenne in Trento, il Jedin offre preciso ragguaglio, che se ha, come è naturale, un interesse precipuamente teologico, non manca neppure di qualche interesse filosofico".
