They tell us much about the convictions and experience of a great variety of people different styles of leadership and of how these distinctive local cultures both bear and shape the larger traditions they represent."-Gordon Harland Studies in Religion "Both volumes of American Congregations resulted from pioneering efforts and they are timely and useful. Whether Christian churches Jewish synagogues Islamic mosques Buddhist temples or the gathering places for other faiths buildings designed for worship are significant to both their own community of believers and their larger communities. Coming to understand the history of places of worship therefore is an essential element in understanding the historical fabric of these communities. Places of Worship offers the abundant insights of an experienced historian of American religion. Using illustrations from a wide diversity of congregations Wind suggests ways in which answers may be sought. In two enlightening appendices he also provides guidance to important published works on American religion and a directory of denominational archives and historical agencies. But perhaps his greatest contribution is to emphasize the necessity of viewing any religious community as a dynamic evolving social organism. The author not only offers a comprehensive rationale for including political and secular influences from each era covered by the religious group's history he also explains to the reader the most effective use of these resources. Because of its fresh perspective this volume will prove invaluable to anyone exploring the history of American places of worship. Places of Worship is Volume 4 in The Nearby History Series. paperback

1938réf. 17183JLos Angeles: Selznick International Pictures November 8 1938. Original 23 page carbon typescript on onionskin paper bound in blue cardstock studio covers. Fine condition. An historic piece showing the struggles David O. Selznick endured trying the create the best screenplay for his classic film. This manuscript written by Bradford Foote compares and points out the differences between the screenplay written by Sidney Howard with a screenplay version written by Foote. The Ransom Center at the University of Texas which holds the archives of David O. Selznick writes “In October 1938 Selznick sent the Sidney Howard script to two top MGM scriptwriters Lawrence Stallings and Bradbury Foote for help editing. The men under confidentiality had eight days to make their suggestions. Foote’s editing gave the film a happy ending destroying one of the novel’s most emotionally powerful scenes. In Foote’s rewrite Rhett does indeed leave but Mammy thrashes the famous “Tomorrow is another day!” speech telling Scarlett “Never you mind tomorrow honey. This here is today! There goes your man!” The scene dissolves to a shot of a railroad station. Scarlett corners Rhett in the car of a train entreating “Oh Rhett! Life is just beginning for us! Can’t you see it is We’ve both been blind stupid fools! But we’re still young! We can make up for those wasted years! Oh Rhett—let me make them up to you! Please! Please!” He kisses her hands and the scene fades out. Selznick considered this rewrite “awful.” Selznick International Pictures unknown
