1918réf. 5720KBerlin: Verlag der Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in commission at Georg Reimer Reichsdruckerei 21st March 1918. Near Fine. Imperial 8vo 26 5: 19 cm. 3 pages numbered 269-272. Letterpress on machine paper in original publisher’s brochure on orange-coloured stock with black title printing. First journal issue in the original printed wrappers of Einstein's early paper on the cosmological implications of general relativity. – Contents: Einstein here criticizes De Sitter's equations for gravitational fields and provides the first proper definition of a space-time singularity. „Einstein never said so explicitly but it seems reasonable to assume that he had in mind that the correct equations should have no solutions at all in the absence of matter. However right after his Einstein's paper »Kosmologische Betrachtungen zur allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie“ mid February 2017 note WoP paper appeared de Sitter did find a solution . Einstein must have been disappointed. In 1918 he looked for ways to rule out the de Sitter solution but soon realized that there is nothing wrong with it.“ Paise Despite Einstein's critique the De Sitter model was the dominant cosmological model until the 1930s at which time Einstein and de Sitter together proposed a ""just right"" cosmological model. The great cosmological debate between Einstein and De Sitter marks the beginning of the modern scientific understanding of the origins of the universe. The Academy's publishing list on the rear cover also announces an offprint of this paper for Reichsmark 0 50. – Condition: Wrappers at margins minimally torn sheet with Einstein's contribution opened and thus cut slighly perforated some pages minimally creased otherwise well preserved partly unopened copy. – Rarity: RBH records 3 copies of this paper at auction 2019 2011 2002 none of them the first separate printing. – Reference: Alicke W. Octavo original cloth frontispiece of Einstein. very good in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with bumping and chipping to the rear panel. Out of My Later Years 1950 is the second and final collection of essays assembled by Albert Einstein 1879-1955 the German-born theoretical physicist whose Special and General Theories of Relativity revolutionized modern thought on the nature of space and time and whose Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 for his explanation of the photoelectric effect confirmed his standing as the most celebrated scientist of the twentieth century. Drawing on Einstein's articles addresses letters and assorted papers across a fifteen-year period from 1934 to 1950 the volume encompasses his personal convictions on religious and humanitarian issues in the wake and aftermath of the Second World War alongside reflections on scientific method the philosophy of physics education and the moral responsibilities of scientists in the atomic age that Einstein's own theories had helped to bring into being. "Since after 1917 Einstein firmly believed that light-quanta were here to stay it is not surprising that he would look for new ways in which the existence of photons might lead to observable devations from the classical picture. In this he did not succeed. At one point in 1921 he thought he had found a new quantum criterion published in the present paper but it soon turned out to be a false lead" Pais Subtle is the Lord pp. 412-413. NEAR MINT CONDITION. A fine fresh example small pencil mark to upper wrapper of THIS RARE PAPER!! - ."Although Einstein could not accept Weyl's theory as a physical theory he cherished "its courageous mathematical construction" and thought intensively about its conceptual foundation. This becomes clear from his paper "On a complement at hand of the bases of general relativity" of 1921. In it he raised the question whether it would be possible to generate a geometry just from the conformal invariance of Equation without use of the conception "distance" i.e. without using rulers and clocks. He then embarked on conformal invariants and tensors of gauge-weight 0 and gave the one formed from the square of Weyl's conformal curvature tensor" Hubert F.M.
