Letterpress on machine paper in original publisher’s brochure on orange stock with black title printing. First offprint in the original wrappers of this important paper by Einstein formulating groundbreaking developments towards a unified field theory. - Content: »On The Unified Field Theory« is one of Einstein's last scientific core works. According to Weil ""This paper represents a new development which was immediate news. A translation by L. L. Whyte appeared in the London Times of Feb. 4 1929. It was quoted in full in ""Observatory"" vol. 52 under the title ""New Field Theory"" pp.82-87 and 1930 pp.11-118."" In 1928 Einstein embarked on a new approach to a unified field theory involving what he called „distant parallelism“. By early 1929 he had solved the main problems involved in writing down field equations for his unified field theory. On the day of offical publication of the third of a formidably technical series of 9 articles on the theory excited headlines appeared in newspapers around the world. - cf. Parkinson Breakthroughs p.279. - Condition State: Mint uncut thus unread. - The list of academy offprints on the rear side of the cover states present offprint not in last place. All offprints listed later were printed in 1929 though. The typeset of all pages is identical to other authentified offprints of this papers. 1918ref. 581Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth 1918. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION OF EINSTEIN'S DISCUSSION OF MACH'S PRINCIPLE a theory Einstein names and one which was historically important to the inspiration that would lead to general relativity. Mach's principle states that "local physical laws are determined by the large-scale structure of the universe" Wikipedia. To Einstein Mach's principle posited the belief that inertia originates in a kind of interaction between bodies. "So strongly did Einstein believe at that time in the relativity of inertia that in this paper he stated it as being on equal footing three principles on which a satisfactory theory of gravitation should rest: 1. The principle of relativity as expressed by general covariance. 2. The principle of equivalence. 3. Mach's principle the first time this term entered the literature" Pais The Science of Albert Einstein 287. Einstein brought Mach's principle into mainstream physics while working on general relativity. Indeed it was Einstein who first coined the phrase Mach's principle. Weil 96. Boni 100. Marked with an asterisk by Weil denoting a major paper. "Einstein's attempts to formulate a unified field theory stemmed from his dissatisfaction with the general relativity theory which did not adequately incorporate the electromagnetic field into the geometry of space-time. In 1918 Hermann Weyl had begun investigating the possibility of constructing a unified field theory preserving the dimensionality of space-time while formally altering its geometry making it a special case of the class known as affine geometries. Einstein's first investigation of Weyl's ideas published in the present paper introduced the notion of distant parallelism; however Einstein later rejected Weyl's theory." 1979ref. 148235New Jersey: Princeton University Press 1979. First edition early printing of this curated collection of Einstein’s writings. Octavo original leather frontispiece. Boldly signed by Helen Dukas and Banesh Hoffman on the front free endpaper. Helen Dukas 1896–1982 was Albert Einstein’s longtime secretary and trusted confidante serving in that role from 1928 until his death in 1955. Deeply involved in preserving and organizing Einstein’s legacy she co-edited several collections of his writings and letters and played a key role in curating the Einstein Archives at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Banesh Hoffmann 1906–1986 was a physicist and mathematician who collaborated with Albert Einstein and made significant contributions to relativity and quantum mechanics. Near fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Uncommon signed by both contributors. Albert Einstein: The Human Side 1979 edited by Helen Dukas and Banesh Hoffmann offers a unique perspective on Einstein beyond his scientific achievements by compiling his personal letters reflections and anecdotes. Unlike traditional biographies that focus on his contributions to physics this collection highlights Einstein’s thoughts on philosophy politics ethics and personal relationships revealing his wit humility and deep moral convictions. Through carefully selected writings the book presents Einstein as both a brilliant scientist and a deeply introspective individual who grappled with the social and ethical implications of his work.
