In fine condition. Translated and edited with an introduction by Leon Simon. An exceptional presentation. Einstein was a prominent supporter of both Labor Zionism and efforts to encourage Jewish-Arab cooperation. He supported the creation of a Jewish national homeland in the British mandate of Palestine but was opposed to the idea of a Jewish state "with borders an army and a measure of temporal power." In a letter to Jawaharlal Nehru dated June 13 1947 he asserted "Long before the emergence of Hitler I made the cause of Zionism mine because through it I saw a means of correcting a flagrant wrong. The Jewish people alone has for centuries been in the anomalous position of being victimized and hounded as a people though bereft of all the rights and protections which even the smallest people normally has.Zionism offered the means of ending this discrimination." Einstein's speeches lectures and letters concerning Zionism were first published in 1930 by The Soncino Press and eleven of these essays were later collected in The World as I See It published in 1933 which Einstein dedicated "to the Jews of Germany". He who has time and tranquility can by reading this book live again the wonderful events which the great Newton experienced in his young days. Nature to him was an open book whose letters he could read without effort. ref. 123093Princeton NJ early December 1950. . Ten-line autograph letter with initial on cream laid paper 14 x 22.5 cm on the verso of an autograph letter by Behram Kur uno lu together with a typed letter signed by Helen Dukas on Institute for Advanced Study stationery 16.5 x 14 cm and a later letter from Dukas dated 1979; a few tiny spots excellent condition. Initialled autograph letter by Albert Einstein correcting the work of a graduate student who would become a prominent member of the theoretical physics community. Turkish physicist Behram Kur uno lu 1922-2003 studied in Edinburgh and completed his doctoral work at Cambridge under Paul Dirac during the late 1940s and early 1950s. He specialised in relativity and unified field theories participated in the discovery of two neutrinos and founded the Center for Theoretical Studies at the University of Miami. In his initial letter to Einstein written on November 24th 1950 Kur uno lu writes that he is 'enclosing you a note on the possibility of a slight modification of the unified field theory. I shall be very grateful if you can kindly read it. I hope it is not inconsistent with the ideas of the theory. I apologise for disturbing you'. Einstein replies in detail on the verso of Kur uno lu's letter returning it and the accompanying manuscript no longer together with the letter with a covering note by his secretary Helen Dukas. Einstein writes 'Equ 1 is not solved by 5 or 6. You have overlooked that not both equations. can hold. I have defined the contravariant y by the first of these equations - The non-existence of a practical solution for the T is no logical objection to the theory. The really problematic point of the theory lies in the compatibility of the equations for the T. E.' In 1952 Kur uno lu published a paper in the Physical Review 'Gravitation and Electrodynamics' in which 'Einstein's unified field theory is modified and some of the physical implications of the new theory are examined' Physical Review volume 88 number 1369 December 15th 1952. 1951ref. 153420Tel-Aviv: Israeli Music Publications 1951. First edition of the published facsimile score of Menachem Avidom’s Symphony No. 2 “David” together with the painted calligraphic broadside dedicating the symphony to Albert Einstein. Folio the manuscript orchestral score reproduced in facsimile spiral bound in plain black boards published by Israeli Music Publications of Tel-Aviv. Accompanied by an elaborate painted calligraphic presentation broadside by the artist Sol Nodel reading “Symphony No. 2 ‘David’ dedicated to Albert Einstein for his inspiration to the Jewish people and to all humanity by the composer Menahem Avidom and presented by the American Fund for Israel Institutions on the occasion of the American tour of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra January February March 1951.” The broadside is additionally inscribed by the composer in black ink at the top left corner “To the greatest man in our generation Prof. A. Einstein humbly from the Composer M. Avidom Princeton 10/1/51.” The symphony was dedicated to Albert Einstein for his inspiration to the Jewish people and to all humanity. Einstein the most celebrated scientist of the twentieth century was also a lifelong and devoted musician a gifted violinist who adored Mozart and revered Bach and who once said that had he not been a scientist he would have become a musician and that the greatest joy of his life had come to him from his violin. A passionate champion of Jewish cultural and educational causes and of the young State of Israel he was among the founders of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and lent his name and moral authority to the building of its institutions. The presentation of Avidom’s score took place during the first American tour of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in the opening months of 1951 when the orchestra led by Leonard Bernstein and Serge Koussevitzky gave fifty-three concerts in forty cities. Together with an original photograph showing the composer presenting the broadside to Einstein and a photocopy of a 1986 letter recording that the score and broadside were the gift of Einstein’s daughter Margot Einstein. In very good condition with light toning and soiling the front cover of the spiral-bound score detached. A remarkable Einstein association uniting a dedicated symphonic score its presentation broadside and a photograph of the moment it was given to him. Menachem Avidom 1908-1995 was one of the founding figures of modern Israeli classical music. Born Menahem Mahler-Kalkstein in Stanislaviv then part of Austria-Hungary he was reportedly a cousin of the composer Gustav Mahler. He studied in Paris and spent several years in Egypt an experience that led him to look beyond the European traditions in which he had been trained. In 1939 he wrote arrangements for the Yemenite-Jewish singer Bracha Zefira and the encounter kindled a lasting interest in fusing Middle Eastern and European musical idioms. In 1944 he produced a series of works in this new style that shaped the rest of his career and helped lay the groundwork for later Mizrahi and Sephardic composers in Israel. From 1945 he served as general secretary of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and in 1955 he was named director of ACUM the Israeli performing rights society. His Symphony No. 2 “David” drawing on the biblical shepherd king is among his best-known works and the present copy presented and inscribed to Albert Einstein is the most storied of its kind. 1916ref. 189311Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth 1916. The foundation of general relativity First separate edition first issue of the work presenting the finalized version of general relativity. The Grundlage was also published in the Annalen der Physik in 1916 but Weil clarifies that the separate publication is now accepted as the earliest published edition of the paper. Einstein had almost finalized the general theory of relativity in 1913. However an error led him to contend that his equations could not be covariant - that they could not be applied without a system of spacetime co-ordinates devised by humans and therefore contextually specific. His first attempt at an overall presentation of the theory as delivered in 1914 was based on this assumption. By 1915 his subsequent reflections had driven him to reapply covariance and in November he published several papers outlining covariant field equations of general relativity. The present work adapts the comprehensive perspective of the 1914 paper with the revised mathematics of the 1915 equations to present "the first systematic exposition of general relativity" Janssen p. 1. Tilman Sauer notes that "in essence Einstein's general theory of relativity of 1916 remains today's accepted theory of the gravitational field" p. 24. This copy includes all the necessary first issue points: the imprint "Druck von Metzger & Wittig in Leipzig. 314" on the title page verso; Ziehen's Die Psychologie as the last title listed in the publisher's advertisement on the rear wrapper; and the imprint "Metzger & Wittig Leipzig" on the rear wrapper. Octavo. Device to title page formulae in the text. Original tan vertically ribbed wrappers printed in black. Light browning and rubbing several small ink spots to foot of front cover wrappers neatly re-glued to block contents crisp: a very good copy. Norman 696; Printing and the Mind of Man 408; Weil 80a.
