1916réf. 189311Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth 1916. The foundation of general relativity First separate edition first issue of the work presenting the finalized version of general relativity. The Grundlage was also published in the Annalen der Physik in 1916 but Weil clarifies that the separate publication is now accepted as the earliest published edition of the paper. Einstein had almost finalized the general theory of relativity in 1913. However an error led him to contend that his equations could not be covariant - that they could not be applied without a system of spacetime co-ordinates devised by humans and therefore contextually specific. His first attempt at an overall presentation of the theory as delivered in 1914 was based on this assumption. By 1915 his subsequent reflections had driven him to reapply covariance and in November he published several papers outlining covariant field equations of general relativity. The present work adapts the comprehensive perspective of the 1914 paper with the revised mathematics of the 1915 equations to present "the first systematic exposition of general relativity" Janssen p. 1. Tilman Sauer notes that "in essence Einstein's general theory of relativity of 1916 remains today's accepted theory of the gravitational field" p. 24. This copy includes all the necessary first issue points: the imprint "Druck von Metzger & Wittig in Leipzig. 314" on the title page verso; Ziehen's Die Psychologie as the last title listed in the publisher's advertisement on the rear wrapper; and the imprint "Metzger & Wittig Leipzig" on the rear wrapper. Octavo. Device to title page formulae in the text. Original tan vertically ribbed wrappers printed in black. Light browning and rubbing several small ink spots to foot of front cover wrappers neatly re-glued to block contents crisp: a very good copy. Norman 696; Printing and the Mind of Man 408; Weil 80a. 1913réf. 188059Leipzig and Berlin: B. G. Teubner 1913. Generalizing relativity First edition of Einstein's early articulation of general relativity his first paper to describe gravity as the curvature of spacetime containing "virtually all the essential features of his general theory of relativity" Norton p. 253. In 1912 Einstein's old school friend Marcel Grossman 1878-1936 secured him a professorship at ETH Zurich where they had both studied as undergraduates. The two men began a collaboration to provide a firmer mathematical foundation to Einstein's concept of gravity as a geometrical property of time and space. The two sections of the Entwurf outline the resulting theory in full complete with gravitational field equations relating the curvature of spacetime to the distribution of mass and energy within it. Einstein contributed the initial section focussing on physical theories while Grossman added the following section developing the more complex mathematical formulae. Michel Janssen editor of the Einstein Papers Project notes that the Entwurf "was published as a separatum in early 1913 and was reprinted the following year in Zeitschrift für Mathematik und Physik" p. 1. The Zeitschrift reprint includes an added section outlining the famed "Hole" argument. An offprint dated 1914 was published with the journal. Provenance: Edward Vermilye Huntington 1874-1952 the American academic who studied the foundations of mathematics at Harvard for 40 years with his signature on the front wrapper. Octavo. Device to title page formulae in the text. Original light green wrappers printed in black. Light rubbing chipping and creasing to wrappers contents clean: a very good copy indeed. 1944réf. 182569London: The Jewish Agency for Palestine 1944. First separate edition of Einstein's appeal for Zionism. Einstein was one of the most prominent international supports of Zionism. He argues Palestine is the only place historically spiritually and culturally tied to the Jewish people. Whereas the Arabs with many homelands the Jews have nowhere else to go. Their claims are rooted not in conquest or nationalism but in justice and survival. The article was originally published in the Princeton Herald earlier that year. This publication prints the article alongside other speeches and letters by Einstein extracted from his 1930 About Zionism. Provenance: Jews' College Library London with their shelf mark to the front wrapper and their stamp to the front wrapper verso. Octavo. Original wrappers. Library markings see note a little creased and spotted. A good copy. unknown
