1905ref. 32820546FIRST EDITION. "On the Movement of Small Particles Suspended in a Stationary Liquid Demanded by the Molecular Kinetic Theory of Heat" appears here on pp. 549-560. This landmark paper on Brownian motion is one of the three great papers from 1905 Einstein annus mirabilis. Although most physicists and chemists accepted the idea of atoms as a useful concept in 1905 many still questioned whether they actually existed. Einstein later claimed that "my major aim in this research was to find facts which would guarantee as much as possible the existence of atoms of finite size." In 1827 botanist Robert Brown had used a microscope to look at dust grains floating in water. He found that the floating grains were moving about erratically a phenomenon that became known as "Brownian motion." In this paper Einstein proved the reality of these molecules and their motions by producing the first statistical physics analysis of Brownian motion. French physicist Jean Perrin used Einstein's results to experimentally determine the mass and the dimensions of atoms thereby conclusively verifying Dalton's atomic theory first proposed in 1808. "Eventually the experimental evidence supporting Einstein's theory of Brownian motion became so compelling that the naysayers were forced to accept the existence of material atoms. His fundamental work on applying statistical methods to the random motions of Newtonian atoms also led to his insights into the photo electric effect through the discovery of a critical connection between his statistical theory of heat and the behavior of electromagnetic radiation. This was the first step in his goal to unify the two fields" APS. Complete issue removed from bound volume. Very good.
2009ref. 345j1635New York: St. Martin's Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 2009. First Edition. Hardcover. 0312362285 . "Focuses on correcting a widely accepted story that Einstein was a major supporter a 'champion' of the state of Israel - a story told and retold primarily by the mainstream media. While Einstein was a secular Jew had mixed feelings about Zionism and supported the goal of a Jewish 'homeland' within Palestine he never wavered from arguing forcefully for equal rights and equal power for the Arabs - whom he called 'kinfolk' of the Jews. Some of these essays and letters covering the years from 1919 to 1955 have never been translated or published." - dust jacket. "It's a pity that the Zionist movement as embodied in the State of Israel took a direction so divergent from the path advocated by the Jewish people's greatest intellect." - Michael Palumbo. "While sadly it seems Einstein's fear that Israel would become a 'captive of narrow nationalism' has been realized his humanism and call for equal rights and equal power between Jews and Palestinians in Israel/Palestine remain an inspiration and model today." - Adam Horowitz. xviii 334 pp. Bibliography List of Sources Notes Index. Occasional tiny marginal pencil marks otherwise book tight and clean with very light wear. Moderate wear to complete dust jacket now in glossy new archival-grade protection. 1931ref. 345H4370New York: The Macmillan Company of Canada Limited. Good. 1931. First American Edition. Hardcover. 8 9-94 pages. Select Bibliography. First published in London in 1930. "Professor Einstein is better known as a physicist than as a Zionist. Yet for many years he has given abundant proof both of a keen interest in Zionism and of a penetrating insight into its underlying ideas. He is impelled to Zionism by his acute consciousness of the excessive price at which the blessings of assimilation are bought by the Jewish communities of the Western world which for him are mainly represented by that of Germany. The price is a loss of solidarity of moral independence and self-respect. These in his view can be regained only if assimilated Jews find some common task of absolute human value to which they can bend their corporate energies as Jews. Such a task is to be found in the restoration of Jewish national life in Palestine." - Introduction. Unmarked with average wear. Backstrip lettering faded. Binding tight. 1933ref. 13747Los Angeles 1933. Signed by the photographer Aaron Tycko of Los Angeles. Prominently signed “Albert Einstein. 1933” below image. Rarely seen photograph of the famous scientist taken during his last visit to Southern California in January 1933 the month Hitler took power in his native Germany. During the five-month trip Einstein 1879-1955 spent most of his time at the Mount Wilson Observatory and the California Institute of Technology where he was offered a position. Later that year he renounced his German citizenship and accepted a professorship at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton New Jersey. Tycko 1893-1975 was based in Los Angeles and often photographed Einstein along with other Hollywood icons of the early twentieth century including Irving Berlin. At the time this photograph was taken Tycko also shot a well-known photograph of Einstein with his wife Elsa. Interestingly Tycko is mention in Einstein’s FBI files because a Hollywood informant reported that the photographer believed Einstein was a communist. This informant contended that Tycko thought Einstein was “the brain that was setting up Hollywood in the 1930’s for the big Communist push . . . He was one of the most dangerous and powerful figures in what has become the Communist movement.” Jerome The Einstein File: J. 1954ref. 195551954. in German black ink. Signed “A. Einstein”. A poem written by Einstein to his colleague and collaborator Ernst Straus and his son Daniel. “Dear Strausse both! My best wishes and greetings in poetic form. It brings even more happiness If it has been anticipated for so long also in one’s circle of friends the event is doubly appreciated. This is what I wish: Let Daniel be like his father thoroughly intelligent and not less joyous so few humans are like that. Many - alas - are born few are chosen to bring light and joy. Let such gift be his drive. Yours A. Einstein” In German “Strauss” means bunch bouquet etc. or ostrich and “Strausse” is plural. Ernst G. Straus 1922-1983 was a mathematician who helped found the theories of Euclidean Ramsey theory and of the arithmetic properties of analytic functions. He was Einstein’s assistant and collaborator both at Princeton and afterwards when he moved to become a professor of mathematics at UCLA. His son Daniel is a professor of chemistry at Cal State San Jose. unknown

First edition of this classic work on the quantum theory of radiation by Einstein in which he predicts the existence of the phenomenon of stimulated emission of radiation.
