'Lights and Shades of Military Life' is a work of military memoir which can be broken down into two different volumes. The first portion of the work is taken from Count de Vigny's production of the historical 'Cinq-Mars novel' as well as other works of military fiction while the latter part is taken from a publication by M. Elzear Blaze a French captain in Napoleon's army. The editor Lieutenant-General Sir Charles J. Napier adds his own thoughts and life experiences through 'Editor's Remarks' throughout the work. Contents fall under 'Recollections of Military Servitude' 'Recollections of Military Greatness' and 'Military Life in Bivouac Camp Garrison Barracks &c.' Collated complete. Bound in half-calf on marbled boards by Maclaren & Macniven. Externally smart. Some marks to boards as well as edge wear to extremities. Rubbing to raised bands of joints and to leather spine. Front hinge is starting but remains firm. Offsetting to endpapers from binding on paste downs. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with age-toning to margins and the odd spot. Our struggle, conducted under the direction of Alm I las beginning in 1005, to see that the machines and items used in, and the documents and photographs pertaining to the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory be returned to their rightful place, reached a positive conclusion in 2008, when these items were temporarily handed over to the Rezan Has Museum after being inventoried at the Museum for the History of Science and Technology in Islam. Following two years of restoration and conservation work, we held the first of a series of exhibitions about the Factory, titled "Like Moths to the Flame: The Ottoman Fire Brigades", in order to revive the spirit of the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory and to share with you t hi- important historical artifacts on their way back home. The "Like Moths to the Flame: the Ottoman Fire Brigad(-: features those indomitable heroes of the city of Istanbul, managed again and again to rise from the ashes. Heroes outfits, performers of daring acts, these brave characters fearir:ssly fought the fires that were Istanbul's greatest nightmare. Firei'vtj.i.t.(2rs, those voluntary soldiers of Istanbul, had their own unique culture, their own rally cries, attitudes, and sayings, their own characteristic relationships, and even veritable tradition of criminal incidents amongst their own, all of which provide insight into the street culture of the city of Istanbul, and the socio-cultural structure and state politics of the period. In addition to the artifacts and historical documents belonging to the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory, our exhibition also contains selected items from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Directorate of Libraries and Museum's Firefighting Museum Collection and the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation's Old Istanbul Photographs Collection. Numerous individuals worked together to make this exhibition happen, and to each of them we would like to express our thanks. First and foremost the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, but also the Atatark Library, our team who so painstakingly worked on the restoration and conservation of the works exhibited, Prof. Dr. Baha Tanman for his contributions, Galru Tanman, who was so generous with her support, and the Istanbul Research Institute, all of you have our eternal gratitude.

In fair condition on aged paper with creasing and one closed tear towards the head. The map has Trafalgar Square at its head with the note that the two 'Basins' carry '40000 Galls. each' and Parliament Square at its foot. Whitehall and Parliament Street connect the two on the right of the map and to the left of the map is the lake in St James's Park: '200000 Galls Underground Tank Pumping Station 1400 Galls Pump 15 foot Gravity Main from Serpentine'. Also marked on the map are 'Inlet connections for L.F.F. Pumps and Pits' '6 Signle Outlet Suction Hydrants Round Thread' and 'Two 6 foot Steel Pipes in Subway Also under Embankment in Subway'. Down the centre of the map are the government buildings: the Admiralty Treasury Downing Street Foreign and Colonial Offices India Office and Home Office Office of Works Board of Education Board of Trade and Ministry of Health.
