First appearance of a major paper in the kinetic theory of gases in which Maxwell proved that the viscosity was independent of pressure as predicted and nearly a linear function of the absolute temperature T.One of Maxwell's major investigations was on the kinetic theory of gases. Originating with Daniel Bernoulli this theory was advanced by the successive labours of John Herapath John James Waterston James Joule and particularly Rudolf Clausius to such an extent as to put its general accuracy beyond a doubt; but it received enormous development from Maxwell who in this field appeared as an experimenter on the laws of gaseous friction as well as a mathematician."James Clerk Maxwell published a famous paper in 1866 the paper offered using the kinetic theory of gases to study gaseous viscosity. The internal friction the viscosity of the gas is determined by the probability a particle of layer A enters layer B with a corresponding transfer of momentum. Maxwell's calculations showed him that the viscosity coefficient is proportional to both the density the mean free path and the mean velocity of the atoms. On the other hand the mean free path is inversely proportional to the density. So an increase of pressure doesn't result in any change of the viscosity. unknown

2008Unwrapped in Plastic. ; Mnemosyne, Supplements. Monographs on Greek and Roman Language and Literature; 0.6 x 9.7 x 6.4 Inches; 146 pages; Dance of Words argues for a fundamental difference in the modes of expression of actor and chorus. The chorus views the action from the perspective of dancers and singers, while the actors' understanding is shaped by the responsibility they have to make things happen. While this responsibility fashions the actors' considerations of cause and effect, linear movement through time and space, and a sense of history, the chorus' sensibilities arise out of the rhythms of its song and movements. Its mode of expression is a particular way of communicating and elaborating on man's place in the larger order, and its view of the action is bounded by the way that song and dance mirror that order.

1997Very minor lifting of corners of wraps. ; Toronto Old English Studies; 0.69 x 9.78 x 6.78 Inches; 230 pages; The date of Beowulf, debated for almost a century, is a small question with large consequences. Does the poem provide us with an accurate if idealized view of early Germanic culture? Or is it rather a creature of nostalgia and imagination, born of the desire of a later age to create for itself a glorious past? If we cannot decide when, between the 5th and 11th centuries, the poem was composed, we cannot distinguish what elements in Beowulf belong properly to the history of material culture, to the history of myth and legend, to political history, or to the development of the English literary imagination. This book represents both individual and concerted attempts to deal with this important question, and presents one of the most important inconclusions in the study of Old English. The contributors raise so many doubts, turn up so much new and disturbing information, dismantle so many long-accepted scholarly constructs that Beowulf studies will never be the same: henceforth every discussion of the poem and its period will begin with reference to this volume.
