Questo volume raccoglie una serie di scritti teorici (manifesti, riflessioni tecniche sulle arti plastiche, trattati filosofici) di Kazimir Malevic (1879-1935), artista tra i più originali dell'avanguardia del primo Novecento. Le sue pagine, che rendono conto delle innovazioni rivoluzionarie apportate da Malevic, all'insegna di un'arte figurativa imperniata sulle forme non-oggettive, costituiscono anche il nucleo di un sistema di pensiero universale che, in qualche modo, sintetizza le suggestioni proprie di tutta un'epoca fitta di cruciali sconvolgimenti, in Russia e fuori di Russia. I testi sono raggruppati in tre sezioni che segnano i tre momenti nodali della parabola umana e creativa di Malevic: l'invenzione del suo sistema pittorico, il suprematismo, e la sua evoluzione tra il 1915 e il 1923; l'integrazione del pensiero suprematista nella vita (l'azione socio-politica della nuova arte, cara a tutto il modernismo russo, con il suo anelito sintetico); la sublimazione dell'idea suprematista in sistema filosofico, quando Malevic, per l'appunto, fece sì che la sua pittura cedesse il passo alla speculazione e alla formulazione teorica sulla pagina scritta, unico mezzo per raggiungere un'astrazione completa e totale. I testi sono preceduti da un'introduzione dello storico dell'arte Andrei Nakov, che illustra il contesto culturale che fece da sfondo al debutto di Malevic e all'evoluzione della sua estetica.
