1819réf. 9016London: Printed for Longman Hurst Rees Orme and Brown 1819. First edition. 8vo iv 204pp. Complete with 4 plates three of them folding one in color. Original blue paper boards with a later rebacking in dark pebbled cloth. Folding plates bound at rear we have also encountered the color folding plate bound as a frontis interleaved with "description of plates". Boards damp stained faint marginal damp staining to upper corner of pgs. 50-57 front endpaper scuffed else clean and sound with bright plates. Very good. Scarce first edition of this book which illustrated with historical context a novel approach to the removal of bladder stones; the "high operation" being a suprapubic lithotomy not commonly done at the time. This challenging disease at the time became more operable for surgeons moving forward in part thanks to this work. Joseph Constantine Carpue 1764-1846 was also known as being the first English surgeon to successfully perform a rhinoplasty becoming a pioneer in the field of modern plastic surgery. Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown unknown
