Embossed black publisher’s pebbled cloth gilt lettering on spine rubbing & edgewear wear to corners minor soiling to upper fore-edge still a VG- copy w/ ownership signature of Mary A. Cole on endpapers. Later printing of this ever popular work by Trall on the water cure or hydropathy. Trall and the other hydropathic adherents believed that many impurities including those produced from within the body were removed from the body through their treatments. This work encompasses diet exercise sleep habits midwifery pediatrics and more which all could be treated by cleansing the body. In addition the movement firmly believed that drugs poisoned the natural systems of the bodies of patients and caused greater harm. This work was published in many different editions many with the same copyright and in this case Fowler & Wells had moved to the East 21st Address by the 1890s according to their periodicals advertisements and publisher’s notices. Tissot y traite des activités, jeux et sports répandus à l'époque (entre autres la marche, la chasse, la danse, le billard, l'escrime, la natation), de leurs effets sur l'organisme, ainsi que des effets des massages et frictions. Selon Garrison et Morton dans leur bibliographie médicale, il s'agit du premier livre à traiter d'exercice thérapeutique tel que compris aujourd'hui. Reliure pleine basane marbrée d'époque, dos orné à 5 nerfs. (déchirure avec petit manque de papier en marge d'une page, coins frottés, coiffes absentes, début de fente aux mors)

1859réf. biblio816This is a SIGNED very well preserved copy of an extremely scarce and important 1859 medical treatise authored by a highly respected Nashville Tn. physician. There are inscriptions of two Drs. Dake including the author's presentation of the book to Thomas e. Skinner famous Wake Forest College benefactor and trustee. The book was eventually donated to the old Wake Forest College library not operative in 60 years but was not checked out since 1899 by the date stamps. Book was obtained through the Stevens Co.
