See foliation and condition notes for each volume below. Scarce eighteenth-century edition of this seminal compendium of Jewish law halakhah. Compiled between 1170 and 1180 while Maimonides was living in Egypt the Mishneh Torah is regarded as the author's magnum opus. It is the only Medieval-era work that surveys the full panoply of Jewish observance including those laws that are only applicable when the Jerusalem Temple is in existence. The present edition is the first to contain Judah Rosanes' commentary Mishneh le-melekh. "Mishneh Torah" The Repetition of the Law is an appellation originally applied to the biblical book of Deuteronomy; the subtitle "ha-Yad ha-Hazakah" The Book of the Strong Hand plays on its subdivision into fourteen books: the numerical value fourteen is represented in Hebrew letters as Yud 10 Dalet 4 which forms the word "yad" hand. Maimonides sought to provide a complete statement of the Oral Law so that a person who mastered first the Written Torah and then the Mishneh Torah would be in no need of any other book. Contemporary reaction was mixed with strong and immediate opposition focusing on the absence of sources and the belief that the work appeared to be intended to supersede study of the Talmud itself. Maimonides responded to these criticisms and the Mishneh Torah endures as an influential work in Jewish religious thought. According to several authorities a decision may not be rendered in opposition to a view of Maimonides even where he apparently militated against the sense of a Talmudic passage for in such cases the presumption was that the words of the Talmud were incorrectly interpreted. Likewise: One must follow Maimonides even when the latter opposed his teachers since he surely knew their views and if he decided against them he must have disapproved their interpretation. A highly controversial figure both during his lifetime and after his death he is generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba Spain but fled as a child from the Almohad persecution. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah his only work not in Arabic still carries canonical authority particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community as the codification of Talmudic law. His other works include "Kitab al-Siraj" a commentary on the Mishnah "Kitab al-Fara'I" a book on precepts and the celebrated philosophical work "Dalalat al-Ha'irin" known in Hebrew as the "Moreh Nevukhim" The Guide to the Perplexed. In this latter work Maimonides attempted a philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge. This work came to play a central role in all subsequent major controversies over philosophy within the Jewish community during the Middle Ages. Bi-defus Yisrael bar Avraham hardcover

1948réf. 509163Dutton 1948. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. NEAR FINE/NEAR FINE. First Printing. SIGNED on title and subsequently INSCRIBED by Gore Vidal on FFEP to his personal friends Stathis Orphanos and Ralph Sylvester: 'For Stathis and Ralph.' Stathis was a noted photographer and shot Vidal on multiple occasions including the portrait used on the cover of his memoir. Stathis and Ralph also operated the Los Angeles fine-press publishing firm 'Sylvester and Orphanos' which published Vidal's Sex is Politics. 314pp. Black buckram gilt spine lettering blindstamp to front cover. Some trivial toning to pages and endpapers otherwise very clean and sharp; Dust jacket has some light rubbing to extremities and a very small chip to head of spine. Vidal's third novel The City and the Pillar is recognized as the first post-war novel to portray an openly gay protagonist whose homosexuality is treated as natural and appropriate. The novel met with some scandal: in his autobiography Vidal notes that the New York Times refused an advertisement for the book and that for a period of six years following no major newspaper or periodical would review his work. He quotes an editor at Dutton as saying 'You will never be forgiven for this book. Twenty years from now you will still be attacked for it.' Vidal also notes private enthusiasm expressed by his LA friends and fellow Gay writers Christopher Isherwood Thomas Mann and Steven Spender. While Spender averred that the novel was essentially autobiographical Vidal denied it. Dutton hardcover

1948réf. 144891New York: E.P. Dutton & Company 1948. First edition of this landmark novel from the library of Anais Nin. Octavo original black cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Accompanied by a clipped dedication page that reads "For Anais Nin" boldly signed by Vidal laid in. Gore Vidal and Anais Nin's friendship emerged from their shared commitment to challenging the literary and cultural orthodoxies of mid-twentieth-century America. While Vidal’s incisive social satire and Nin’s lyrical explorations of erotic subjectivity differed in style both writers pursued themes of identity and transgression which created a foundation of mutual admiration. In fine condition. From the library of Anais Nin. An exceptional association linking these two great writers. Stylistically influenced by Hemingway this work "is distinguished by its honesty and lack of self-pity; the central figure is unexceptional in every respect but his sexual choices" Stringer 690. 1946réf. 16668JNew York: Dutton 1946. First Edition First Printing of the Author’s First Book. With a remarkable extensive signed inscription by Gore Vidal to Dr. William Shelton Gray Jr. written over two pages providing details on the development and history of the novel: “For Bill Gray - Twenty years later; this first and onlyedition was 5000 copies - In time all sold - There has never been a hard-cover reprint - The book was written 1944-45 - Begun aboard F.S. 35 at Chesapeake Bay just before New Year's '44. Finished at East Hampton Shortly after Hiroshima – Gore Vidal Jan 2 - 1967 NYC”. Vidal’s inscriptions in books are notoriously short even to close friends and this book has the longest Vidal inscription we have encountered anywhere. William Gray was the Chairman of the English Department at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland Virginia who edited Tennessee Williams’ only book of poetry In the Winter of Cities and one of W.H. Auden’s last poems “The Aliens” was dedicated to him. Gray met and befriended Vidal through Williams. Hardcover dust jacket octavo 222 pages. The volume is in very good used condition with some rubbing to the cloth edges in a very good dust jacket with some rubbing some aging and light chipping. Williwaw is the term widely thought to be Native American in origin for a sudden violent Katabatic wind common to the Aleutian Islands. The story combines war drama maritime adventure and a murder plot. The book is a World War II novel set on a U.S. ship in the Arctic waters around the Aleutians in the Pacific Ocean in the middle of the local storm season during World War II. The nervousness and tension of the crew and a handful of passengers at the approach of the Williwaw is stretched to breaking point when the Chief Engineer Duval falls overboard in suspicious circumstances. 1820réf. 179207London: R. Ackermann 1820. Stunning views of South America First edition a desirable copy with pre-publication watermarks dated 1818 of "the only notable colour plate book in English dealing with the Argentine" Tooley. The hand-painted aquatints offer some of the finest depictions of early 19th-century life customs and architecture in the Río de la Plata region. The English sailor Vidal 1791-1861 joined the Royal Navy in 1808 serving as a purser for the next five decades. The plates in his book were based on drawings he made when he visited South America with HMS Hyacinth in 1816-8 as secretary to the admiral on the South American Station. They constitute "the main source of pictorial information about early Argentina" Speake p. 39 and "possess a subtle charm of their own apart from their historical and geographical value" Hardie. Some of the scenes included are "Monte Video" "Church of San Domingo" "Beggar on Horseback" "Pampa Indians" "General View of Buenos Ayres from the Plaza de Toros" "Balling Ostriches" "Guachos of Tucman" and "A Horse Race". Vidal depicts the inhabitants of the Pampas and Rio de la Plata Regions outdoor markets and plazas and buildings. "Through E. Vidal's watercolours. you get a sense of the city house facades Vidal never painted any interiors made not of rare stone but of baked adobe bricks called chorizos - sausages" Wilson p. 13. The work was first published in six monthly parts between May and October 1820. The early watermarks here suggest that this volume was possibly bound from the parts rather than from later book-form issues. Ackermann announced 750 small paper and 50 large paper copies. A comparison with the Abbey copy indicates that this example is from the smaller format. Large quarto 325 x 250 mm. With 24 hand-coloured aquatint plates 1 double-page 3 folding.
