1948ref. 509163Dutton 1948. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. NEAR FINE/NEAR FINE. First Printing. SIGNED on title and subsequently INSCRIBED by Gore Vidal on FFEP to his personal friends Stathis Orphanos and Ralph Sylvester: 'For Stathis and Ralph.' Stathis was a noted photographer and shot Vidal on multiple occasions including the portrait used on the cover of his memoir. Stathis and Ralph also operated the Los Angeles fine-press publishing firm 'Sylvester and Orphanos' which published Vidal's Sex is Politics. 314pp. Black buckram gilt spine lettering blindstamp to front cover. Some trivial toning to pages and endpapers otherwise very clean and sharp; Dust jacket has some light rubbing to extremities and a very small chip to head of spine. Vidal's third novel The City and the Pillar is recognized as the first post-war novel to portray an openly gay protagonist whose homosexuality is treated as natural and appropriate. The novel met with some scandal: in his autobiography Vidal notes that the New York Times refused an advertisement for the book and that for a period of six years following no major newspaper or periodical would review his work. He quotes an editor at Dutton as saying 'You will never be forgiven for this book. Twenty years from now you will still be attacked for it.' Vidal also notes private enthusiasm expressed by his LA friends and fellow Gay writers Christopher Isherwood Thomas Mann and Steven Spender. While Spender averred that the novel was essentially autobiographical Vidal denied it. Dutton hardcover

1948ref. 144891New York: E.P. Dutton & Company 1948. First edition of this landmark novel from the library of Anais Nin. Octavo original black cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Accompanied by a clipped dedication page that reads "For Anais Nin" boldly signed by Vidal laid in. Gore Vidal and Anais Nin's friendship emerged from their shared commitment to challenging the literary and cultural orthodoxies of mid-twentieth-century America. While Vidal’s incisive social satire and Nin’s lyrical explorations of erotic subjectivity differed in style both writers pursued themes of identity and transgression which created a foundation of mutual admiration. In fine condition. From the library of Anais Nin. An exceptional association linking these two great writers. Stylistically influenced by Hemingway this work "is distinguished by its honesty and lack of self-pity; the central figure is unexceptional in every respect but his sexual choices" Stringer 690. The military novel marked the beginning of his writing career aged twenty-one and is based upon his Alaskan Harbor Detachment duty. Williwaw is a quasi-autobiographical novel and its value comprises not merely Vidal's excellent writing but the insight it offers into the author's experiences. E.P. Dutton & Company hardcover

1946ref. 16668JNew York: Dutton 1946. First Edition First Printing of the Author’s First Book. With a remarkable extensive signed inscription by Gore Vidal to Dr. William Shelton Gray Jr. written over two pages providing details on the development and history of the novel: “For Bill Gray - Twenty years later; this first and onlyedition was 5000 copies - In time all sold - There has never been a hard-cover reprint - The book was written 1944-45 - Begun aboard F.S. 35 at Chesapeake Bay just before New Year's '44. Finished at East Hampton Shortly after Hiroshima – Gore Vidal Jan 2 - 1967 NYC”. Vidal’s inscriptions in books are notoriously short even to close friends and this book has the longest Vidal inscription we have encountered anywhere. William Gray was the Chairman of the English Department at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland Virginia who edited Tennessee Williams’ only book of poetry In the Winter of Cities and one of W.H. Auden’s last poems “The Aliens” was dedicated to him. Gray met and befriended Vidal through Williams. Hardcover dust jacket octavo 222 pages. The volume is in very good used condition with some rubbing to the cloth edges in a very good dust jacket with some rubbing some aging and light chipping. Williwaw is the term widely thought to be Native American in origin for a sudden violent Katabatic wind common to the Aleutian Islands. The story combines war drama maritime adventure and a murder plot. The book is a World War II novel set on a U.S. ship in the Arctic waters around the Aleutians in the Pacific Ocean in the middle of the local storm season during World War II. The nervousness and tension of the crew and a handful of passengers at the approach of the Williwaw is stretched to breaking point when the Chief Engineer Duval falls overboard in suspicious circumstances.
