First edition of the author's third novel. A milestone in LGBT literature The City and the Pillar is significant for its sympathetic portrayal of a homosexual protagonist defying social norms post-World War II. It is also recognised as one of the definitive war-influenced gay novels being one of the few books of the time to deal directly with male homosexuality. New York, E.P. 1981réf. WALTER-FILM004146Vintage original second revision script by Gore Vidal adapted from the novel by Lucian Truscott USA. Los Angeles: Richard Roth Productions 6 March 1981. 11261 quarto brad bound in production wrappers. Paper filing label across spine NEAR FINE. Second revision draft script of this early form of an adaptation by Gore Vidal to television of Lucian Truscott's novel. In its present state the script would translate into a two-hour television film. Truscott's novel set at West Point at the time of the Vietnam War reportedly based it on fact. The completed film when screened on television dealt with homophobia both external and internalized and it was very strong stuff in the mid-1980s at the height of the Reagan era. The film was clearly troubling to some contemporary critics but it nonetheless was nominated for three Emmy Awards. A very interesting example of Vidal's work as a screenwriter especially because of the film's LGBTQ subject matter. Richard Roth Prod. paperback

Association copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "Valerie from Gore June 1954." The recipient Valerie Gore was the author’s sister. Vidal’s father remarried in 1939 and had two children with his second wife; Valerie was born in 1946. The two remained close throughout their lives. Near fine in a very good dust jacket which was laminated by Vidal. An exceptional association. Dark Green Bright Red is a novel by Gore Vidal concerning a revolution headed by a former military dictator in an unnamed Central American republic. It drew upon Vidal's experiences living in Guatemala during the Guatemalan Revolution. E.P. Dutton & Company hardcover
