Summary What is a minority How did members of minority groups in the medieval Mediterranean world interact with contemporaries belonging to other groups In what ways did those contacts affect their social positions and identities The essays collected in this volume approach these questions from a variety of angles examining polemic social norms economic exchange linguistic transformations and power dynamics. These essays recast the concept of minority - as a mutable condition rather than a fixed group designation - and explore previously-neglected collective and individual interactions between and among minorities around the medieval Mediterranean basin. Minorities are often defined as such because they were in some way excluded from access to resources or denied participation as a consequence of a group affiliation or facet of their identity. Yet at times their distinctiveness also lay less in their exclusion than in particular ways of relating to spheres of power whether political or moral and in certain dissenting conceptions of the world. Through these contributions we shed light on both the continuities that such interactions displayed across intervals of space and time and the changes that they underwent in particular locales and historical moments. 1974ref. 207551974. LGBTQ Transgender Vidal Gore. Myron. New York Random House 1974. Signed in purple ink by author on title page. First edition. 244 pages. Original navy blue binding with "GV" stamped in gilt on cover and author title and published stamped on spine. Original dustjacket in good condition. Myron is the 1974 sequel to Vidal's groundbreaking 1968 novel Myra Breckinridge one of the first American novels to feature a transgender protagonist. This twisting gender-bending narrative follows the same protagonist after the events of Myra Breckinridge when they have returned to their neutered male persona Myron. While watching TV one night Myron finds himself transported into the 1948 film Siren of Babylon a chaotic world where Myra threatens to take over again. In the introduction to the book Vidal speaks out against the landmark 1973 Miller vs. California case in which the Supreme Court ruled that obscene and pornographic materials are not protected by the First Amendment and may be banned by governmental authority saying "Chief Justice Warren Burger admitted that although no link has been found between the consumption of pornography and anti-social behavior any community may assume that such a connection exists if it wants to - in other words an outraged community may burn a witch even though properly speaking witches do not exist." In an sardonic attempt to preclude himself from such a witch hunt Vidal replaced the "dirty" words in the novel with the names of the concurring Supreme Court justices and anti-pornography activists Father Morton Hill and Edward Keating to "revitalize a language gone stale and inexact from too much 'burgering' around with meaning." Some light dampstaining to dustjacket. Overall very good condition. First edition novel dealing with transexuality and gender-fluidity signed by celebrated author and free speech activist Gore Vidal. unknown

1970ref. 198741970. Twentieth Century Fox's Myra Breckinridge publicity archive 1970 documents the visual promotion of a major-studio film centered on a transgender woman gender nonconformity and attacks on Hollywood masculinity. Adapted from Gore Vidal's 1968 novel the film starred Raquel Welch as Myra Breckinridge with John Huston Mae West Rex Reed Farrah Fawcett and Roger Herren in supporting roles; AFI identifies the film's subjects as including bisexuality homosexuality lesbianism "sex change" Hollywood actors students seduction and gendered social conflict. The material belongs to LGBTQ film and New Hollywood publicity culture illustrating how a controversial commercial studio release used star image costume and provocative gender performance to market a film built around trans identity and the disruption of conventional sexual roles. The archive consists of four 1970 promotional items for Myra Breckinridge: three color lobby card photographs and one vintage glossy black-and-white silver gelatin publicity photograph. The large lobby card measures 11 x 14 inches; the two smaller lobby cards measure 8 x 10 inches; the silver gelatin photograph measures 8 x 10 inches. The lobby cards show scenes from the film featuring Welch and Huston including images of Welch in the white costumes closely associated with the character's stylized screen persona; all three lobby cards carry the film title the 20th Century Fox logo and a 1970 copyright statement in the lower white margin. The images foreground costume celebrity and theatrical confrontation rather than narrative continuity making the group especially useful for studying the marketing of gender transgression through Hollywood glamour camp visual codes and star publicity. 1 Twentieth Century Fox. Myra Breckinridge large lobby card. Los Angeles: Twentieth Century Fox 1970. Color promotional card 11 x 14 inches showing Raquel Welch in a scene from the film and retaining the printed studio and copyright information in the lower margin. 2 Twentieth Century Fox. Myra Breckinridge lobby card. Los Angeles: Twentieth Century Fox 1970. Color promotional card 8 x 10 inches featuring Welch and emphasizing the film's use of costume and pose in constructing Myra's public image. 3 Twentieth Century Fox. Myra Breckinridge lobby card. Los Angeles: Twentieth Century Fox 1970. Color promotional card 8 x 10 inches showing another publicity still from the film with printed title and studio branding. 4 Twentieth Century Fox. Myra Breckinridge silver gelatin publicity photograph. Los Angeles: Twentieth Century Fox 1970. Glossy black-and-white 8 x 10 inch still connected to the film's original publicity campaign. Minor edge wear and light handling to the lobby cards and photograph; images remain clean and legible; overall very good. Focused group of original publicity materials for a controversial LGBTQ film text whose mainstream studio circulation trans subject matter and highly stylized presentation of gender make it a significant artifact of 1970s queer film reception and visual culture. unknown

ref. 59436Ludion 2022. Hardcover 240 pages 330 x 240 mm NL / ENG / NEW illustrations in colour / b/w. ISBN 9789493039803. //// The artist José Vermeersch 19221997 is known for his ceramic sculptures of heterogeneous figures. Yet he was a painter weaver and designer too who created a rich oeuvre imbued with his passion for people animals and life. This book pays tribute to the genesis of Vermeersch figurative work and uses around a hundred sculptures and paintings to show the exceptional way in which his pictorial and his ceramic work are interwoven. The indeterminate and non-binary character of Vermeersch oeuvre from gender to species human/animal is explored in depth along with ideas such as sustainability and fragility. Presences unveils a series of unpublished pictures from the artists archive in which we see him at work in his studio or at the two wood-fired kilns he built for himself. Unique photographs that testify to the patience and care with which Vermeersch created his sculptures. He had his clay figures stand lie or sit waiting quietly for the alchemy of the natural elements to take effect. Vermeersch work displays a certain slowness and a powerful affinity with a specific place and with nature. Precisely because of this his work seems to connect more than ever with the current focus on sustainable and autonomous processes of production. Ludion 2022 hardcover
