1949réf. 2222322244925The First UK printing published by John Lehmann London in 1949. The BOOK is in Very Good condition with some ghosting to the spine. The gilt decoration and titling to the spine has dulled slightly more-so the publisher's logo at the foot of the spine. Some toning to the text-block and outer page edges due to the quality of paper stock used. Free from inscriptions. The scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good condition with some fading of colouring to the lower spine portion. Mild edge-wear with a little loss at the upper spine and a few nicks. Mild rubbing and creasing in places to the edges. The B.Biro wrapper artwork looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been signed without dedication by the author to the title page. A very scarce early title from the acclaimed author. 'In 1948 Mr. Vidal published 'The City and the Pillar' which was dedicated to J. T. Jimmie Trimble. It is what would now be called a coming-out story about a handsome athletic young Virginia man who gradually discovers that he is homosexual. By today s standards it is tame and discreet but at the time it caused a scandal and was denounced as corrupt and pornographic. Mr. Vidal later claimed that the literary and critical establishment The New York Times especially had blacklisted him because of the book and he may have been right. He had such trouble getting subsequent novels reviewed that he turned to writing mysteries under the pseudonym Edgar Box and then for a time gave up novel-writing altogether. To make a living he concentrated on writing for television then for the stage and the movies NY Times August 12th 2012. Collectible. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Besides osme minor signs of foxing to the edge in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Julian Latin: Flavius Claudius Iulianus Augustusa; also known as Julian the Apostate was Roman Emperor from 361 to 363 as well as a notable philosopher and author in Greek. A member of the Constantinian dynasty Julian became Caesar over the western provinces by order of Constantius II in 355 and in this role campaigned successfully against the Alamanni and Franks. Most notable was his crushing victory over the Alamanni in 357 at the Battle of Argentoratum Strasbourg leading his 13000 men against a Germanic army three times larger. In 360 in Lutetia Paris he was proclaimed Augustus by his soldiers sparking a civil war between Julian and Constantius. Before the two could face each other in battle however Constantius died after naming Julian as his rightful successor. In 363 Julian embarked on an ambitious campaign against the Sassanid Empire. Though initially successful Julian was mortally wounded in battle and died shortly thereafter. Julian was a man of unusually complex character: he was "the military commander the theosophist the social reformer and the man of letters". He was the last non-Christian ruler of the Roman Empire and it was his desire to bring the Empire back to its ancient Roman values in order to as he saw it save it from dissolution. He purged the top-heavy state bureaucracy and attempted to revive traditional Roman religious practices at the expense of Christianity. His anti-Christian sentiment and promotion of Neoplatonic paganism caused him to be remembered as Julian the Apostate by the church. Ironically he was the last emperor of the Constantinian dynasty which was the empire's first Christian dynasty. Wikipedia hardcover
