Studierte 1858 bis 1863 bei Ludwig Traube und Rudolf Virchow (1821-1902) an der Universität Berlin. 1865 bis 1868 arbeitete er als Assistent von Ernst Viktor von Leyden (1832-1910) in Königsberg, dort habilitierte er 1866 in Innerer Medizin. 1868 bis 1870 arbeitete er als Militärarzt und Dozent in Berlin, in gleicher Funktion war er von 1870 bis 1872 in Breslau tätig. 1872 wurde er nach Freiburg und bereits 1874 als ordentlicher Professor nach Jena an die medizinische Klinik berufen, von wo aus er 1882 als Chef an die Erste Medizin. Klinik der Universität Wien wechselte. Dort verblieb er bis zu seinem Tode im Jahre 1905. Bereits 1879 wurde er in die Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina aufgenommen.
