1933ref. 014261London: Denis Archer 1933. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Good Plus. First edition first printing. Hardback bound in brown cloth with gilt titling to spine author's name misspelt as Bernard. 19 × 12.5cm 261pp. There is no publisher noted at the base of the spine but this appears to be normal for this title. A strikingly eccentric work of speculative fiction from 1933 The Milk in the Cocoanut serves as a 'future history' that imagines the world from 1940 through to the 21st century. Written by W. Barnard Faraday - an economist barrister and aviation pioneer - the novel blends high science with metaphysical absurdity. The narrative follows the world-altering discoveries of a bizarre cast including Ezra Gooch the 'Professor of Subliminal Mathematics' and John Peter Moab whose radical research suggests a biological divide in the human race: that some possess souls while others do not. From the influence of the shaman Okki-Okki to the dawn of a new philosophical era Faraday's work is a rare example of the 'odd-book' genre - a strange satirical and intellectually dense precursor to modern social science fiction. Faraday is perhaps best remembered for his Arthurian fantasy Pendragon but this scarce volume remains his most curious contribution to the literature of the future. Condition: This is a good solid copy but has spotted foxing heaviest to the title page and lessening through the book. There is also spotted foxing to the page edges. The inner binding is secure and the book remains in strong readable condition. Denis Archer hardcover
ref. 43930Washington DC: Library of Congress. Very Good. First Edition. Hardcover. 8vo; This volume wholeheartedly confirms the old adage that "you can't judge a book by its cover. But just to confuse the issue it was designed and made to be so judged. The spine has a label lettered in gilt on a red leather label reading: "CARRANZA / ORATORIA / ARGENTINA" Below this is an oval stamp lettered in black: "Library of Congress / Smithsonian Deposit." Below this at the foot of the spine also lettered in black: "LA PLATA y Bo. ARIES / 1905." These details do indeed belong to a real book published by the firm of Sesé y Larrañaga Editores -- in the cities of La Plata and Buenos Aries Argentina. This book was edited by Neptalí Carranza under the title: "Oratoria Argentina : Recopilación cronológica de las proclamas discursos manifiestos y documentos importantes que legaron a la historia de su patria argentinos célebres desde el año 1810 hasta 1904." It has become a standard compilation and we would be pleased to have a copy to offer. Yet we can guarantee that the volume being offered in this listing does not contain even so much as one single leaf of Carranza's ""Oratoria Argentina." All the many leaves sturdily bound in our volume are blank. The only writing of any sort within is typewritten on a smaller sheet tipped to the front free endpaper -- which explains all. The heading: "LIBRARY OF CONGRESS / BINDING EXHIBIT." / DUCK "CALENDARED" -- sic for "CALENDERED". "Used for a book not in popular demand but requiring a strong binding on account of its size and weight. Used extensively for the large volumes of current bound newspapers." To make this binding sample a suitable demonstration of appropriate material style and workmanship for a heavy volume this large octavo measures 6-1/2" x 10" and weighs 5 pounds 3 ounces 2.345 kilos -- all the high-quality paper contained within these calendered duck covers is coated. As their annual reports will quantify the Library of Congress spends a fortune on bookbinding. We have seen thousands of examples especially the deep red buckram which is still being used for the books expected to have to endure serious wear during decades of use. Most of those have identifications or "tickets" of the binding firms which made them - especially volumes bound during the 20th century. But there is none for this sample dummy volume. Perhaps it was made "in house" at the LC Our binding was certainly made well before the LC created an entire Division devoted to the matter Binding and Collections Care Division. Cotton Duck from the Dutch word "doek" meaning linen canvas is still widely used for book binding. "Calendering" refers to processing fabric through rollers under considerable heat and pressure to smooth coat or thin the material. . N.D. Library of Congress hardcover

1870ref. ABE-1558953051969Chapman & Hall London 1870 First edition of Dickens' final novel. Octavo contemporary quarter bound calf with hand marbled boards. Five raised bands gilt titles and tooling to the spine with a slight loss to the base. Interesting hinged extra calf flap to the top of the text block to allow the book to be shelved end on. This is titled in gilt too and the author's name mis-spelled 'DICKINS'. Spine title is correctly spelled! It is double gilt ruled raised gilt bands. Brilliant engraved frontispiece portrait of Dickens with tissue guard a superb clean first printing. 12 engraved plates by Luke Fildes also clean first prints. In collectable condition with light rubbing and some toning to the pages. Charles Dickens' novels regularly revolved around masks dual identities and other secrets. The Mystery of Edwin Drood however "enlarged and strengthened such matters in the pursuit of a larger vision a vision which depicts the 'lanes of light' between the dark pillars of a crypt and which reflects upon 'that mysterious fire which lurks in everything" Ackroyd 1056. Unfortunately at the time of his death on June 9 1870 Dickens had written only six parts of the book three of which had been published. The remaining three were published posthumously. Dickens had so closely guarded the plot's outlines even from his closest friends that to this day the identity of Drood's killer remains a topic for speculation discussion and debate. "There are few of Dickens' stories which are superior in the matter of composition. one of the best unfinished mystery stories in literature" - This is a fascinating copy with the hinged extra flap to the text block as a possibly unique detail. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Chapman & Hall London hardcover
