Aphorisms Corpus Hippocraticum The Aphorisms Greek fsµ Aphorismoí later also called Sententiae1 in Latin are a collection of texts within the Corpus Hippocraticum. They belong to the most widely distributed parts of the Hippocratic writings i.e. they have often been annotated and edited since antiquity. In seven chapters or books attributed to the Coic school of physicians2 422 short statements on a wide variety of medical fields and topics such as nosology therapy physiology and gynaecology3 have survived. The best-known aphorism is Vita brevis ars longa "Art is long life is short". In literary history the aphorisms give their name to the tradition of aphorisms as a literary genre. The dominant themes of the writing are therapeutic and prognostic relating to the assessment of the course of the disease. Theodorus Janssonius van Almeloveen 24 July 1657 - 28 July 17121 Theodoor Jansson was a Dutch physician and the learned editor of various classical and medical works. He was an untiring author and editor and acquired the highest reputation as a teacher and for his scholarship science and particularly for his great bibliographical knowledge. He had a great knowledge of books. Besides editions with notes of Strabo Juvenal Quintilian the Aphorisms of Hippocrates Celsus Apicius Aurelian on Diseases and Decker's Treatise on Supposititious Writings he has left a work in Dutch on the anatomy of the muscles several bibliographical treatises in Latin among which are a work-De Vitis Stephanorum a list of Plagiaries and a list of books promised that never appeared. hardcover

1601rif. A9FGFK4C5FH3Leiden 1601. 12mo. ex Officina Plantiniana by Christopher Raphelengius Contemporay vellum with the manuscript title on the spine remnants of ties. With a woodcut printer's device on the title page and several decorated woodcut initials. 1 1 blank 14 512 16 pp. Rare first edition of the Aphorisms of Hippocrates of Cos 460-370 BCE the father of Medicine edited and translated into Latin by the famous first Leyden professor of medicine Johannes Heurnius. The aphorisms of Hippocrates are the earliest collection of the kind. It is a series of observations from which the patient's affliction could be deduced and treatment prescribed. Their broad application made them exceptionally valuable to medical practitioners of the time. Included are notable and often invoked phrases as: "Life is short the art long" and "The physician must not only be prepared to do what is right himself but also to make the patient the attendants and externals cooperate".Apparently the translation by Heurnius was very successful. Other editions appeared in 1607 in Leiden and Antwerp 1609 and 1611 both by the Officina Plantiniana in Leiden. A "second edition" was published in 1623 by J. le Maire in Leiden. Furthermore it was published in 1615 in Lyon by the widow of A. de Harsy and in Jena in 1690.With manuscript owner's inscriptions on the recto and verso of the front board on the back pastedown and with several manuscript annotations in the margins. The vellum is creased and browned slightly damaged around the spine the bookblock has separated from the binding along the front hinge still attached at the bottom endband the back hinge is somewhat weakened. Occasionally foxed slightly browned throughout.l Krivatsy 5642; NNBW IV cols. 744-5; STCN 058866566 4 copies; not in BMN; Garrison & Morton. hardcover
1685rif. OV-039Amsterdam: Henricus Wetstenius 1685. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. Hippocrates. Hippocratis Aphorismi edited by Theodorus Janssonius ab Almeloveen. Amsterdam: Henricus Wetstenius 1685. First edition of Almeloveen's influential edition of the Hippocratic Aphorisms. An unusually appealing pocket-format seventeenth-century edition of one of the foundational texts of Western medicine. Almeloveen presents the Aphorisms of Hippocrates in Greek and Latin supplemented with parallel passages drawn particularly from Hippocrates and the Roman medical writer Aulus Cornelius Celsus with additional material from Celsus following the principal text. The engraved title bears a portrait of Hippocrates and the Amsterdam imprint of Henricus Wetstenius dated 1685. Bound in what appears to be contemporary full calf with raised bands and extensive gilt decoration to the spine including a gilt-lettered title compartment. The leather remains attractive and remarkably intact for a volume approximately 340 years old showing expected rubbing surface wear and edge wear particularly at the corners and spine extremities. Gilt tooling remains clearly visible. Binding remains solid and usable. Interior shows expected age toning occasional spotting and evidence of historical use. The engraved Hippocrates title/portrait is present and remains attractive. No major structural defects observed in the material examined. Because of the age and tightness of the binding the volume has not been aggressively opened or collated leaf-by-leaf in order to preserve the original binding. A particularly appealing early medical book: the first Almeloveen edition of the Hippocratic Aphorisms printed in Amsterdam in 1685 and preserved in a handsome contemporary leather binding. 1724rif. HCHAA4VAGU23Paris: Guillelmum Cavelier 1724. Contemporary calf gold-tooled spine red edges marbled pastedowns and endpapers. 12mo. With a woodcut device on title-page and a tailpiece on the last page. 2 volumes. 18th-century edition of Hippocrates Aphorisms in Greek and Latin printed in 1724 in Paris. Hippocrates in the Islamic tradition known as Boqrat where he is often referred to as the first codifier of medicine is often named together with Galen and their works mainly survived because of the Arabic translations. His aphorisms are a series of observations from which the patients affliction could be deduced and treatment prescribed. Their broad application made them exceptionally valuable to medical practitioners of the time. These aphorisms were very popular in the Islamic world and they can show us that Arabic-speaking authors critically engaged with Greek heritage in Arab translation. Today some of these Arabic commentaries on the Aphorisms have survived and these sources show us how medicine developed in Europe and Arabia through the ages. Although this edition is a combination of Greek and Latin the work was very influential for Arabic medical literature because the Aphorisms led to new writings in this genre. The Aphorisms are an influential benchmark in the Arabic medical literature. With an ink inscription of Ludovici Dubois doctor of medicine. Slightly damaged at lower hinge of the first volume small wormhole in lower margin of the first volume and some occasional spots. A very good copy.l Blake p. 213; P.E.
