Informing the relationship between Latin and the vernaculars was the choice of Latin as the language of the Western Roman Empire and the Roman Church. This choice entailed the possibility of a shared literary culture and heritage across Europe, but also had consequences for access to that heritage. Scholarship on the Romance languages has contested the relevance of the term diglossia, and the divergence between written or spoken Latin and Romance is a subject of energetic debate. In other linguistic areas, too, questions have been voiced. How can one characterize the interaction between Latin and the various vernaculars, and between the various vernaculars themselves? To what extent could speakers from separate linguistic worlds communicate? These questions are fundamental for anyone concerned with communication, the transmission of learning, literary history, and cultural interaction in the Middle Ages. This volume contains contributions by historians, cultural historians, and students of texts, language, and linguistics, addressing the subject from their various perspectives but at the same time trying to overcome familiar disciplinary divisions. The study of physiognomy, kiyafe(t) ilmi, which is as old as humanity itself, has been developed into a science by Islamic writers who have used in it support of other branches of learning such as medicine, administration, literature and theology. In Islamic thought, the human body is in a sense conceived as clothing or an attire that envelops and protects the soul. Works that dealt with the interpretation of this relationship between the inner qualities and the outer appearance were known under names such as 'kiyafet-nâme, vesiletü'n-'irfân, firâset-nâme and zübdetü'l-'irfân. The science of kiyafet was handed down by Muslim Arab thinkers to Persians and Turks as a cultural legacy and attained a significant place in Ottoman learning. The kiyafet-nâme of Seyyid Lokman Çelebi, who is one of the leading court eulogists, was written in the ornate literary style of 16th century which is difficult to comprehend today. In the introduction of the work he gave it the title of Kiyâfetü'l-insâniyye fî semâili'l-'Osmâniyye. The book is composed of two parts, Part I is concerned with a definition.

This collection of essays examines the 'Grimmian Revolution', the paradigm shift in the humanities that came with the publication of Jacob Grimm?s Deutsche Grammatik. In doing so, they honour T.A. Shippey, who has been a leading figure in reconsidering the contributions of the Old Philology and its impact on the humanities, particularly the rediscovery of the ancient languages and literatures of Northern Europe; the role this has played in the creation of national and regional identities; the attempts to extend the methods of comparative philology to comparative mythology; and the collection of folktales, folk-ballads, and the development of folkloristics. The sixteen essays in this collection focus on the impact made by nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century philology in the fields of medieval studies and language studies, and in the construction of Northern European national identities, mythologies, and folklore. An investigation of the general subject of multilingualism in medieval England, France, and Italy with attention to the interaction among vernacular languages and between these and Latin. This volume contains essays on various aspects of multilingualism in medieval France, Italy, England, and the Low Countries. The fifteen contributions discuss the use of the different vernaculars and Latin in both literary and non-literary contexts, showing how cultural and social factors determined the choice of language for a particular purpose or type of text. The role of French in non-French contexts is a major theme of these essays: in the British Isles after the Norman Conquest, in Italy as a response to the need for mainly secular types of literature which did not exist in Italian, and in the Low Countries by virtue of geographic contiguity and change of rulers. Special attention is paid in the French context to the use of French and Occitan in areas of the South. Some essays examine specific cases or text-corpora, while others examine questions of multilingualism from more theoretical, linguistic, and rhetorical points of view. Together, they form an invaluable introduction to the topic of medieval multilingualism, illustrated by meticulously executed case-studies, which future work in the area will have to take into account. Languages : French.
Hardback, VIII+350 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503524719. Elizabeth of Spalbeek, Christina Mirabilis, and Marie d'Oignies were three of the famous late twelfth-/early thirteenth-century 'holy women' from the region of Brabant and Liege: their life stories (written in Latin by Philip of Clairvaux, Thomas of Cantimpre, and Jacques of Vitry) were read throughout later medieval Europe, and Margery Kempe modelled her Book, and her life, upon Marie?s. The Latin lives of these beguine saints were not well known in England, but they were translated into English in the fifteenth century, and survive together in a single manuscript: Oxford, Bodleian Library, Douce 114. Three Women of Liege is the first critical edition of these Lives, which represent some of the only evidence of English interest in continental female mysticism. This edition includes an introduction that discusses the role of the manuscript in England and three essays that analyze the roles of these beguines in their Low Countries home of Liege along with the English reception of their lives. The edition itself is also extensively annotated and glossed, making it accessible to any scholar of English medieval literature. Languages : English, Middle English.

Paperback, XVIII+234 p., 21 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503540542. New studies of the changing meaning of the myth of Robin Hood, from the Middle Ages to the present. The Robin Hood tradition is a rich assembly of exciting stories, more than five hundred years old and still thriving. From medieval ballads of yeoman resistance and gentrified Renaissance stories of Lord Robin versus bad King John, the tradition survived lustily into modern film, through which Robin Hood, played by major stars like Fairbanks, Flynn, and Costner, has become a truly international hero of natural law. This richly varied tradition enables scholars to study how different periods have understood the concept of Robin?s noble resistance to wrongful authority. These new essays uncover innovative topics like Robin?s relation with the cult of archery in the late Middle Ages, the purpose of the recently discovered 1670s? Forresters manuscript of outlaw ballads, and what Thomas Love Peacock thought when in 1815 he met in Windsor Forest a man called Little John. Other essays explore the social meanings and contexts of the texts, from the stark early ballads and their contacts with both Catholicism and Protestantism, through to modern excitements like the Kevin Costner film of 1991 and the links between Robin and Batman. Just as the five-hundred-year tradition of the Robin Hood story is alive today, so this collection shows how vital and varied is modern analysis of the myth of the best known and most loved of all the outlaws.
