Hardback, 424 p., 46 b/w ill. + 224 colour ill., 22 x 28,5. FINE ISBN 9781905375769. The Paper Museum ('Museo Cartaceo') is a collection of some 10,000 drawings and prints assembled during the seventeenth century by the Roman patron and collector, Cassiano dal Pozzo, and his younger brother, Carlo Antonio. It represents one of the most significant attempts before the age of photography to embrace human knowledge in visual form, documenting ancient art and culture, architecture and topography, natural history and social customs. The 160 drawings catalogued in this volume are derived from five ancient manuscripts: the famous Vatican Vergil, the so-called 'Roman' Vergil, the Vatican Terence, and the less well-known Palatine Agrimensores, all in the Vatican Library, and from a fifth codex, now lost, known as the Chronography or Calendar of the year 354. The bulk of the drawings were copied for Cassiano between 1632 and 1634 for the purpose of studying both the characters depicted and the allied evidence of ancient costume and artefacts. By the later seventeenth century, when Pietro Santi Bartoli executed the last group of drawings in the present volume for Carlo Antonio, manuscript illustrations had come to be cherished as much for their rarity as examples of ancient painting as for their documentary value. Introductory essays provide an overview of the dal Pozzo commissions, the manuscripts and their history down to Cassiano's day, as well as their study in the wider context of classical scholarship through to the eighteenth century. All the drawings are reproduced in colour at full page, with accompanying descriptions of the subjects or relevant ancient verses in modern translation and brief commentaries. Languages : English.

1826Original Signed Letter by Lord Holland. 8vo. 4 pages on a double-leaf measuring approximately 11cm x 17cm. Very good condition. An interesting letter between English upper class aristocrats, pertaining to the natural history of fresh water fish, and the sport of angling, with reference to reports by respected angler and author on the subject, Sir Humphrey Davy, as well as Lord Kinnaird of Scotland. The recipient is unidentified, but could be MP Thomas Creevey, or Samuel Rogers the famous author and banker, both of whom the Baron was frequently communicating with at the time. Dated, Holland House, 17 July 1826, and signed Vassall Holland, the letter was originally sent with two reports from the Select Committee on the Salmon Fisheries of the United Kingdom, published for the Great Britain Parliament, House of Commons, in 1825. Sir Humphrey Davy (1778-1829), English Baron, was highly respected for his study and skill as an angler. In 1828, two years later than this letter which refers to his expertise, the baron published a book on the subject, titled "Salmonia or Days of Fly Fishing." Very well received, it was a few editions, and an American edition followed four years later. In it he compares the habits and physiological attributes of river and lake fish throughout Europe, including numerous rivers in England, the Danube, Glommen river in Norway, Lake Morat in Switzerland, the Rhine, and so forth. Naturally, the self-touted philosophical angler, also contemplates various fishing strategies.
Hardback, 641 p., 20 b/w ill. + 50 colour ill., 22 x 28. ISBN 9782503517186. This book is primarily a catalogue of those nearly-intact extant books containing the full music of the Mass made between the date of the Bohemian Revolution (July 1419) and the Battle of the White Mountain (November 1620). Two principal religious factions were active in Bohemia and Moravia during the period. The larger, the Utraquists, took communion in both bread and wine. The Roman Catholics, fewer but still numerous, followed the then relatively recent practice of using bread only. While graduals are important sources for the liturgy practised by Utraquists and Roman Catholics, many of them are also of great interest artistically and historically. Some of the more beautiful books were produced for use by the literary societies, later incorporated as guilds, which were responsible for the music in their churches. The information the books contain about the membership of the guilds, containing as it did most of the social strata of the towns, gives important information about the contemporary social structure and about the strength of Utraquism. Individual guild members often sponsored a page at the beginning of a mass set which was profusely decorated. The quality of the art and the evolution in the iconography can be appreciated in the book's 50 colour plates. Languages : English.

Poets and Princes offers a richly textured interdisciplinary survey of late medieval and early Renaissance court cultures across Europe as they are reflected in the neo-Latin verse of the itinerant poet, Johannes Michael Nagonius. Poets and Princes offers a richly textured interdisciplinary survey of late medieval and early Renaissance court cultures across Europe as they are reflected in the neo-Latin verse of the itinerant poet, Johannes Michael Nagonius. In 1496 the poet laureate Nagonius presented Henry VII with a manuscript of Latin panegyric poetry. This elaborate diplomatic gift from Pope Alexander VI solicited the King's support against Charles VIII of France. The verse emphasized the mutual benefit of an alliance: if Henry supported him the Pope would acknowledge disputed Tudor claims to England's throne. For Henry, the gift represented a literary and political coup. With all the rhetorical skill of a learned poet, Nagonius presented the King as a classical hero on an epic scale in the latest Italian style. The work thus acknowledged Henry's international significance. Other recipients of Nagonius's panegyric verse include Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, Vladislav II of Bohemia, Louis XII of France, Doge Leonardo Loredan, the condottieri Niccolo Orsini and Gian Giacomo Trivulzio, Giovanni Bentivoglio, lord of Bologna, and Duke Ercole d'Este of Ferrara. The presentation of a deluxe manuscript to Julius II, celebrating the pontiff 's campaign in the Romagna, marked the climax of the poet's career. This analysis of the life and works of Nagonius thus provides a fascinating insight into the world of late medieval and early Renaissance court cultures. It contributes to the growing field of neo-Latin scholarship, examining the manuscripts and para-texts, studying the relationship between volume and dedicatee, placing these manuscripts within the wider literary and artistic cultures of the courts where they were presented, and investigating the role of neo-Latin verse within court cultures. It incorporates dogmatic treatises and reflects several ancient cults devoted to the historical Buddha Sakyamuni as well as several Bodhisattvas. Of the three Chinese translations form the original Sanskrit text the one by Yi Jing (7th century) became the basis of further traditions. Fragments of a translation from this Chinese version into Old Turkish around the 10th century, were found by the numerous and famous Central Asian expeditions in Gansu as well as in the Turfan oasis. For the critical edition of the forewords and the first two chapters, all surviving manuscripts and blockprints (altogether two in Petersburg and about twenty in the Turfan Collection of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften) have been collated. Parts missing in the Petersburg manuscripts are here edited for the first time. The edition is accompanied by a German translation as wellas a commentary on textual and Buddhological problems. All available remnants are reproduced in facsimile on 120 plates. Languages: German.

Languages: German.

This volume presents a critical edition, translation, and study of one of the most important works of medieval science, the Almagesti minor, the earliest Latin commentary on Ptolemy?s Almagest. This summary of the first half of the Almagest incorporated the astronomy of Islamic astronomers and altered Ptolemy?s work to make it accord with the author?s scientific ideals. The Almagesti minor had a profound effect upon astronomical writings throughout the 13th-15th centuries, including the work of Georg Peurbach, Johannes Regiomontanus, and many others. The Almagesti minor is one of the most important works of medieval astronomy. Probably written in northern France circa 1200, it is a Latin summary of the first six books of Ptolemy?s astronomical masterpiece, the Almagest. Also known to modern scholars as the ?Almagestum parvum?, the Almagesti minor provides a clear example of how a medieval scholar understood Ptolemy?s authoritative writing on cosmology, spherical astronomy, solar theory, lunar theory, and eclipses. The author incorporated the findings of astronomers of the Islamic world, such as al-Batt?n?, into the framework of Ptolemaic astronomy, and he altered the format and style of Ptolemy?s astronomy in order to make it accord with his own ideals of a mathematical science, which were primarily derived from Euclid?s Elements. The Almagesti minor had a profound effect upon astronomical writing throughout the 13th-15th centuries, including the work of Georg Peurbach and Johannes Regiomontanus. In this first volume of the Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus text series, Henry Zepeda offers not only a critical edition of this little-studied text, but also a translation into English, analysis of both the text and its geometrical figures, and a thorough study of the work?s origins, sources, and long-lasting influence. Henry Zepeda is a historian of science. He is a Teaching Fellow at Wyoming Catholic College, and he previously worked in the Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus project at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities. His research is focused upon medieval mathematics and astronomy of the 12th to 15th centuries.
