Paperback. 424 p., 140 x 210 mm, Languages: French, Old French. ISBN 9782503544694.

News Catalogue Contact & About Partners Downloads Scroll up Scroll down Scroll up Scroll down Scroll up Scroll down Scroll up Scroll down The linguistic situation of medieval Europe has sometimes been characterized as one of diglossia: one learned language, Latin, was used for religion, law, and documents, while the various vernaculars were used in other linguistic registers. Informing the relationship between Latin and the vernaculars was the choice of Latin as the language of the Western Roman Empire and the Roman Church. This choice entailed the possibility of a shared literary culture and heritage across Europe, but also had consequences for access to that heritage. Scholarship on the Romance languages has contested the relevance of the term diglossia, and the divergence between written or spoken Latin and Romance is a subject of energetic debate. In other linguistic areas, too, questions have been voiced. How can one characterize the interaction between Latin and the various vernaculars, and between the various vernaculars themselves? To what extent could speakers from separate linguistic worlds communicate? These questions are fundamental for anyone concerned with communication, the transmission of learning, literary history, and cultural interaction in the Middle Ages. This volume contains contributions by historians, cultural historians, and students of texts, language, and linguistics, addressing the subject from their various perspectives but at the same time trying to overcome familiar disciplinary divisions. Figures Infrastructures is a re-cartography of section E18- H16 of the Michelin roadmap No. 533 Regional Benelux. Figures Infrastructures rearranges the infrastructural lines featured on the Michelin map into a topological atlas structure that highlights the dynamic interdependence of the infrastructural networks (roads and railroads) as they develop over time into complex interrelated systems. The aura of precision and comprehensiveness emanating from the familiar Michelin roadmap, which gives confidence to the traveler, is abandoned. In the space of this visual book, stories are densely stacked, Cartesian projection moves over for multiple compositions. This cartographic book shows the impact of infrastructure on the development of a region in a unique way. The cartography proves to be a valuable instrument for urban research. Bieke Cattoor dissected the transport networks, roads and railways of the Kortrijk region in Belgium and filled them in with historical and topical information. The various elements in an infrastructural network turned out to be constantly evolving and to influence one another in the process. Moreover, roads and railways proved to form patterns and to lead to nodes. This book presents a new method of dissecting the infrastructural network in a simple manner and at the same time revealing its complexity. This method can be deployed in urban research to chart the layered structure of the landscape.
Hardback, approx. X+455 pages ., 2 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503527543. Medievalists and Renaissance specialists contribute to this compelling volume examining how and why the classics of Greek and Latin culture were taught in various Western European curricula (including in England, Scotland, France, Germany, and Italy) from the tenth to the sixteenth centuries. By analysing some of the commentaries, glosses, and paraphrases of these classics that were deployed in medieval and Renaissance classrooms, and by offering greater insight into premodern pedagogic practice, the chapters here emphasize the 'pragmatic' aspects of humanist study. The volume proposes that the classics continued to be studied in the medieval and Renaissance periods not simply for their cultural or 'ornamental' value, but also for utilitarian reasons, for 'life lessons'. Because the volume goes beyond analysing the educational manuals surviving from the premodern period and attempts to elucidate the teaching methodology of the premodern period, it provides a nuanced insight into the formation of the premodern individual. The volume will therefore be of great interest to scholars and students interested in medieval and Renaissance history in general, as well as those interested in the history of educational theory and practice, or in the premodern reception of classical literature. paperback, 13,5 x 21,5 cm, 128 pagina's. ISBN 9789460041556. In 1788 publiceert een zekere medisch doctor J.A.
Paperback, 525 pages , 156 x 234 mm, Languages: English. ISBN 9782503548791. William Durand (c. 1230-Nov. 1, 1296), Bishop of Mende, France, was unquestionably the most renowned liturgical scholar of the later Middle Ages. His encyclopedic allegorical exposition of the rites and worship services of the Latin Church, the Rationale divinorum officiorum, or "Rationale for the divine offices," is the best known medieval work in its genre. Divided into eight books of varying length, the Rationale is exhaustive in its treatment of a wide variety of subjects: the church building and liturgical art; the ministers of the church and their functions; liturgical vestments; the Mass and the Divine Office; the Church's calendar and its feast days. Modern scholarship has clearly shown that Durand's Rationale superseded all previous liturgical commentaries within only a few years of its publication (c. 1292-1296). By the end of the fifteenth century, it had become one of the most widely disseminated treatises of its kind in western Europe. Book 4, Durand?s lengthy and detailed commentary on the Mass, has never been translated into English. The present volume makes this important text available for modern students of liturgy, musicology, theology, and art history for whom the original Latin text is not accessible. The present translation also provides extensive annotation and explanation of Durand?s sometimes cryptic etymologies, while bringing to light important source material embedded within his commentary. The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum Continuatio Mediaeualis as Guillelmus Durantus - Rationale divinorum officiorum IV (CCCM 140). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation. Corpus Christianorum in Translation (CCT 14)

paperback, geillustreerd, 224 pagina's, (vierde druk) nieuwstaat !. ISBN 9789075697254. Handboek verhaalanalyse (2001, herziene editie 2005).
softcover, 272 pagina's, nieuw staat !

Hoe belangrijk is stijl daarbij? Wiener.

One of the forgotten works of the Middle Ages is the Stella clericorum, edited here for the first time since the sixteenth century. Though short, often derivative in content, and generally rather unassuming, the Stella clericorum was nonetheless one of the most popular traetises of the later Middle Ages. More perhaps than any other work of the period, the Stella clericorum pulls together into a brief and usefull treatise the characteristic twelfth-century themes of dignity of the priesthood and the dangers of spiritual negligence, which helps to explain its continuing medieval popularity.
