2015New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 120 p. Konstantin Nikolayeviç Leontyev, (1831-1891). Bizansçilik ve Sark meselesi. This study analyzes a nearly forgotten Russian intellectual, Konstantin Nikolaevich Leontiev's (1831-1891) ideas on democracy, liberalism, nationalism, and the East-West dichotomy in the second half of the 19th century. Leontiev spent nearly ten years in the Balkan provinces of the Ottoman Empire as a diplomat, travelled and made observations in the conflict-ridden Ottoman Macedonia. Leontiev's political opinions, Byzantinism as he called it, took shape during his diplomatic service. At the basis of Leontiev's approach to politics, history, and religion laid a theory of aestheticism. He searched for beauty and poetic value in everything from politics to daily life. In line with his historical theory explaining the rise and fall of civilizations, Leontiev underlined that Russia should hold fast to the Byzantine heritage in order to avoid cultural decline. He idealized an anti-nationalist but strictly theocratic political regime. Leontiev's conservative utopia (or dystopia) presents a sui generis assessment of the theoretical deficiencies of such concepts like nationalism, democracy, and liberalism.

The study of physiognomy, kiyafe(t) ilmi, which is as old as humanity itself, has been developed into a science by Islamic writers who have used in it support of other branches of learning such as medicine, administration, literature and theology. In Islamic thought, the human body is in a sense conceived as clothing or an attire that envelops and protects the soul. Works that dealt with the interpretation of this relationship between the inner qualities and the outer appearance were known under names such as 'kiyafet-nâme, vesiletü'n-'irfân, firâset-nâme and zübdetü'l-'irfân. The science of kiyafet was handed down by Muslim Arab thinkers to Persians and Turks as a cultural legacy and attained a significant place in Ottoman learning. The kiyafet-nâme of Seyyid Lokman Çelebi, who is one of the leading court eulogists, was written in the ornate literary style of 16th century which is difficult to comprehend today. In the introduction of the work he gave it the title of Kiyâfetü'l-insâniyye fî semâili'l-'Osmâniyye. The book is composed of two parts, Part I is concerned with a definition.

[= Darülfünûn: The focus of Ottoman cultural modernization]. This is a comprehensive book on the history of the modern university which emerged as part of the cultural modernization process that followed the Tanzimat reforms. It records and evaluates on basis of first-hand sources the stages of formation of the university from realisation of its concept until its institution as the University of Istanbul. It is the result of many years of research by Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu. the formation of a European-type university represented a transformation in Ottoman cultural and educational life. in addition to building the university's legal, administrative and financial structures, it necessitated policy decisions on such subjects as the university model to be followed, the curricula and the faculty. The present work reviews the process extensively. It is comprised of three books laid out in two volumes. The first book examines the emergence of the idea of the modern university beginning from the period of the Tanzimat and its establishment after three attempts, and analyses its evolution in stages, until the 1933 university reform. the second book looks into the development of the Darülfünun in the light of evolving concepts and trends in cultural, social and scholarly life. As to the third book, it describes in detail the development of each of the Faculties of Science, Letters, Theology, Law and Medicine with respect to curricula, faculty, institutes affiliated, among other aspects of their activities. A very heavy and oversize set.
