ref. 3067Paris: Editions Librairie Seguier 1988. First collected edition of Messiaen's detailed accounts of each of Mozart's piano concertos which had appeared individually in concert programs. Olivier Messiaen 1908-1992 was the pre-eminent French composer of the second half of the 20th century. From a total edition of 100 numbered copies this is ONE OF ONLY 50 COPIES WITH A LOOSE COLOR LITHOGRAPH BY BALTHUS. The lithograph in soft colors depicts a bay with a smoking volcano in the background. Balthus Balthazar Klossowski de Rola 1908-2001 was one of the great French artists of the 20th century. In theory the book is supposed to be signed by Messiaen and the lithograph by Balthus but in fact neither is signed. The publication of this book was carried out in the most chaotic possible way: Messiaen ended up signing only presentation copies and Balthus ended up signing only a few impressions of the lithograph. Large folio 56 x 38.5 cm. Loose as issued in printed wraps and publisher's cloth portfolio/clamshell box. FINE AND BRIGHT with no defects. Paris: Editions Librairie Seguier, 1988 paperback

Brown boards with gilt lettering on the spine; colorfully illustrated DJ with white and black lettering; 160 pp.; 107 pages of plates; richly illustrated primarily in color. "This book is a thorough overview of the work of Balthus b. 1908 the elusive painter whose fascinating images of young women were first greatly admired by the Surrealists and have remained so today. This controversial artist is exceedingly reclusive and until the last decade rarely gave interviews or allowed himself to be photographed. As a result both his life and his work have been the subject of much intrigue and speculation. Now his eldest son Stanislas. Klossowski de Rola offers privileged insights into the art and thought of this remarkable man. Here is the widest selection of Balthus's work ever published: landscapes street scenes still lifes and women from the 1930s to the present including all his most important paintings of the last ten years. A unique collection of rare photographs presents the young Balthus in his studio as well as in recent images taken by his friend Henri Cartier-Bresson and other. Photographers. The art of Balthus - private hermetic evocative mysterious - lends itself to both deep readings and simple appreciation. The artist himself has always resisted the former remaining convinced that the paintings should speak for themselves. But bowing to the demands of a career that has encompassed major retrospective exhibitions at the Tate Gallery London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art New York he has assisted his son in the creation of this book." -- DJ. Profusely illustrated. 'Alchemy its mysteries and the quest for the Philosopher's Stone have been a strand in the development of European culture from antiquity onwards. By the seventeenth century the complex pictorial language of alchemical symbols had reached a high point of elaboration and beauty. With the spread of printing the whole fantastic iconography flowered as never before. This magnificent book presents a selection of the finest alchemical engravings brought together for the first time. The best engravers of the age--the De Bry family Merian De Hooghe and others--worked to interpret the haunting emblems of Lambsprinck and Michael Maier the profundities of the wordless Mutus Liber or the Christian mysticism of Jacob Bohme. In his introduction and commentaries the author investigates the origins of this visual tradition interprets the symbols and provides information on authors publishers patrons and engravers.'
