"In this volume we have at last as complete a record of the lives and works of two great English animal painters as industrious research and artistic acumen can supply. Mr. Shaw Sparrow's appreciation of George Stubbs as a pioneer among our horse painters is just ; it was that rare judge of a horse and exacting art critic the late Sir Walter Gilbey who in 'Animal Painters of England' wrote that 'we might almost divide our British painters of horses into two periods - those who lived before Stubbs and those who followed him and profited by his monumental labours at the Horkstow farmhouse.' To realize fully the merits of his work we must compare his horses with those of men who went before him and of his contemporary Sawrey Gilpin ; thus and only thus can we discern the magnitude of the advance initiated by Stubbs."
