ref. 194650New York: Doubleday Book & Music Clubs 1989. From the 41st President to the 39th President Presentation copy from President George H. W. Bush to Jimmy Carter inscribed by Bush on a presentation bookplate mounted to the front free endpaper verso "To President Jimmy Carter Merry Christmas 1989. George Bush". Despite their political differences - and Bush's role as Reagan's running mate in Carter's landslide defeat in 1980 - the two presidents maintained cordial respectful relations. Following Bush's death Carter stated that "His administration was marked by grace civility and social conscience". Published to mark Bush's inauguration and the bicentenary of George Washington's first inauguration the book contains a biography of every American president. It describes Carter as having "brought to the White House an honest grin a disarming candor and lots of inexperience" p. 383 and the newly inaugurated Bush as having "offered the nation the chance to continue in the direction which President Reagan had so compellingly outlined" p. 444. The copy is out-of-series from an edition of 1000 copies. The opening text page has the ink stamp "from the library of Jimmy Carter" added ahead of the book's inclusion in the posthumous sale of Carter's library at Christie's with proceeds benefiting the Carter Family Foundation. Octavo. Original blue sheep spine lettered in gilt. Housed in original blue slipcase. A little rubbing with some discolouration to slipcase. A very good copy. unknown
ref. 64559Privately Printed n.d. 1960s. James Bond reference FIRST EDITION. Quarto illustrated with heraldic crests. Pp.51 comprising 41 text pages plus preliminary letters and appendix. Original buckram boards titled in gilt to spine. A TLS is laid in from the author "to Jonathan" dated 26 May 1965 presenting the book and there is a further letter from James Bond historian John Griswold former owner of this copy. Fine condition. A volume of roneographed typed copy notes and correspondence between Fleming and Mirrlees of the College of Arms in London who acted as adviser to Fleming in all matters of Heraldry and who provided Fleming with the original colour drawing of the coat of arms and the motto of Bond of Peckham reproduced within which was utilised in Richard Chopping's dust-jacket illustration. Fleming and Mirrlees built up a genuine respect and friendship whilst researching the book and Mirrlees featured as the character 'Sable Basilisk' in the story the construction of the name being explained on the preface of this volume. Additionally Fleming's appreciation was shown when he made Mirrlees Basilisk the dedicatee of 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'. A legendary Fleming rarity singled out by Campbell in his foreword; 'Sable Basilisk must be scarce as it is limited to about half a dozen copies'. In a letter dated 10th May 1974 Mirrlees confirms that he produced only 6 or so copies. Campbell calls for a slip-case but this may be erroneous or a later addition; we know of three copies out of the original half-dozen and none of these possess a slip-case. Ex Adrian Harrington/Lucius Rare Books £7000 inventory no.37328 June 2011; subsequently sold by Christie's 2022 auction slip inserted. Privately Printed, n.d. [1960s] unknown

2013ref. 1881Minneapolis: Milkweed Editions 2013. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. A scarce signed copy of the first printing here inscribed to no recipient on the half-title page: "In honor of our oldest teachers the plants Robin Wall Kimmerer." As detailed in articles about the sensation that this book has become Braiding Sweetgrass had a first printing of only 8000 copies most of which were probably bought by libraries; no major newspaper reviewed it. In 2020 five years after the paperback was first released Braiding Sweetgrass made the New York Times bestseller list for paperback nonfiction and it hasn’t left—this week Feb 22 2026 is its 303rd week on the list currently #12. As of 2024 it had sold more than 2 million copies. A word-of-mouth phenomenon. We've been watching for about five years and this is the first signed hardcover copy we've found. So far as we can tell there aren't even any other hardcover copies on the market. Priced accordingly. Very good with faint foxing to the outer edge of the text block and perhaps a dozen dogeared pages. In a very good minus jacket with light foxing to some margins. A book of our times and scarce more so signed. Milkweed Editions hardcover
